Cable Procurement Strategy information

What is cable procurement strategy?

Cable procurement strategy refers to the planning and execution of acquiring cables and related materials for specific projects or ongoing operations. This involves assessing project requirements, identifying reliable suppliers, negotiating contracts, managing costs, and ensuring timely delivery of quality cables. Effective cable procurement strategy helps organizations reduce risks, control expenses, and maintain uninterrupted operations by securing the necessary materials in advance.

What are some common challenges faced in a cable procurement strategy role, and how can they be effectively addressed?

Professionals in cable procurement strategy often face challenges such as fluctuating raw material prices, supply chain disruptions, and ensuring compliance with technical specifications. To address these issues, it is important to build strong relationships with reliable suppliers, stay updated on market trends, and implement robust risk management practices. Collaboration with engineering, logistics, and finance teams is also key to aligning procurement activities with organizational goals and ensuring timely project delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in cable procurement strategy, and why are they important?

To thrive in Cable Procurement Strategy, you need expertise in supply chain management, negotiation, and a strong understanding of the cable industry, often supported by a degree in business, engineering, or logistics. Familiarity with procurement software (such as SAP or Oracle), contract management systems, and relevant certifications like CPSM is important. Outstanding analytical thinking, stakeholder management, and communication skills set top performers apart. These abilities ensure cost-effective sourcing, risk mitigation, and alignment with organizational objectives in a competitive market.

This position reports to the Technical Manager.

  • Must be a U.S. Person (U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident) due to ITAR regulations.
  • 7-10 years of estimating/quoting experience in cable and harness manufacturing or complex electro-mechanical assembly, preferably in an aerospace/defense environment.
  • Advanced proficiency in MRP/ERP systems (preferably Visual ERP), Microsoft Project, Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Workspace.
  • Expert-level skills in Microsoft Excel (Power Query, VBA/Macros, complex financial modeling, scenario analysis).
  • Extensive knowledge of cable manufacturing processes (e.g., extrusion, braiding, shielding, overmolding, harness assembly) and techniques in an aerospace/mil-spec environment.
  • Deep understanding of AS9100 quality requirements and interconnect industry standards (WHMA-A-620, IPC-A-610).
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles relating to product costing, material pricing, overhead allocation, and margin analysis.
  • Highly proficient in technical drawing interpretation (including schematics and harness diagrams), vendor management, cost modeling, and analytical report development.
  • Strong ability to develop labor hours estimates based on process complexity, statements of work, and bill of materials requirements as well as recommendations for design for manufacturing improvements.
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and written communication skills with the ability to interface with customers, sales teams, and senior leadership.

Our core values - Accountability, Collaboration, and Empowerment (ACE) - are the foundation of how we operate and drive success. You will take ownership of your contributions, collaborate with a team that gets stuff done, and be empowered to innovate and pursue bold initiatives that drive our business forward.
Are You Our Next ACE?
  • Lead the end-to-end technical quoting process, from initial RFQ review to the creation and delivery of final quotation packages for complex engineered cable assemblies, wire harnesses, and bulk cable builds.
  • Develop and manage all comprehensive cost estimates, creating detailed pricing analysis using Visual ERP and advanced Excel modeling to evaluate all material, labor, tooling, and manufacturing process costs.
  • Formulate market-aligned and value-based pricing models for custom engineered products, new product introductions (NPI), and repeat production runs.
  • Interface directly with customers and sales teams to clarify technical requirements, communicate proposal details, and ensure all quote packages are comprehensive and professional.
  • Manage the entire quoting pipeline, establishing systematic RFQ review protocols and providing weekly status updates to sales and leadership on quote status, pricing recommendations, and competitive analysis.
  • Calculate and commit to accurate manufacturing lead times by analyzing material availability, supplier lead times, internal manufacturing capacity, and technical complexity factors.
  • Calculate Non-Recurring Engineering (NRE) costs, tooling requirements, test equipment investments, and setup costs for new product bids.
  • Drive achievement of corporate margin targets by embedding strategic cost analysis, value engineering opportunities, and supplier optimization data into the quoting process.
  • Monitor quote vs. actual cost performance, identifying gaps and implementing corrective actions with measurable KPIs and continuous improvement processes.
  • Coordinate with engineering teams and manufacturing supervisors to ensure all quotes and estimates reflect current capabilities, capacity constraints, and technical feasibility.
  • Lead the implementation of estimating and quoting best practices to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and reduce quote response time.
  • Develop and validate optimal Visual ERP system configurations for estimating processes, including multi-level BOM structures and cost roll-up methodologies.
  • Perform detailed cost analysis during new product development cycles to support strategic pricing decisions.
