Job description

Construction Project Manager is responsible for managing the schedule, scope, budget, and execution of large-scale data center fiber infrastructure and bulk splicing projects. This role oversees projects involving backbone fiber deployments, mass fusion splicing, fiber distribution systems, cross-connect installations, network commissioning, and fiber testing within hyperscale, enterprise, and colocation data center environments.

The Project Manager coordinates all phases of project delivery, including project planning, customer coordination, material procurement, staffing, construction oversight, reporting, and project closeout. Serving as the primary point of contact for customers, internal teams, subcontractors, and field leadership, this position ensures projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

Responsibilities

Project Execution & Technical Oversight

  • Manage and oversee large-scale data center fiber infrastructure projects, including backbone fiber installations, conduit systems, fiber distribution frames (FDFs), cross-connects, and mass fusion splicing operations.
  • Direct all phases of bulk fiber splicing activities involving ribbon fiber, loose tube fiber, MPO/MTP connectivity, and high-count fiber cable deployments.
  • Coordinate and lead multiple fiber splicing crews across hyperscale and enterprise data center campuses.
  • Ensure fiber infrastructure installations comply with customer specifications, industry standards, and project quality requirements.
  • Develop and execute project schedules that align engineering, construction, splicing, testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Interpret fiber design packages, splice matrices, routing documentation, and as-built drawings.
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts for fiber connectivity issues, attenuation failures, damaged cable, and commissioning deficiencies.
  • Possess strong technical knowledge of:
    • Ribbon fusion splicing
    • Single-mode and multimode fiber systems
    • MPO/MTP connectivity
    • Fiber distribution systems
    • Optical loss budgets
    • Fiber acceptance testing
  • Utilize and interpret data from:
    • Fusion splicers
    • OTDRs
    • Optical power meters
    • Light sources
    • Fiber inspection scopes
    • Fiber characterization testing equipment
  • Review splice reports, OTDR traces, and acceptance testing results to ensure customer and project specifications are achieved.
  • Ensure all fiber systems are properly commissioned and ready for customer acceptance.

Project Controls & Documentation

  • Work closely with Construction Managers, Engineering Teams, and Customer Representatives to execute major fiber deployment initiatives.
  • Conduct site walks, pre-construction reviews, quality inspections, and project audits.
  • Develop project schedules, manpower forecasts, and production plans.
  • Manage procurement and logistics for fiber cable, splice closures, hardware, patch panels, jumpers, and testing equipment.
  • Track project productivity, labor utilization, installation performance, and project costs.
  • Maintain project schedules and provide detailed customer reporting.
  • Ensure all project documentation is completed accurately, including:
    • OTDR Reports
    • Splice Records
    • Fiber Test Data
    • Test Results
    • Redline Drawings
    • As-Built Documentation
    • Closeout Packages

Customer & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Serve as the primary customer interface throughout all phases of project execution.
  • Lead project kickoff meetings, progress reviews, and customer reporting sessions.
  • Coordinate activities with customers, general contractors, engineers, commissioning teams, and data center operations personnel.
  • Provide escalation support and resolution of technical or operational issues.
  • Build and maintain strong, long-term customer relationships through exceptional project delivery and communication.
  • Collaborate with internal operational leaders to ensure resource alignment and successful project execution.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with company safety policies, customer requirements, and applicable regulations.
  • Conduct daily safety meetings, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), toolbox talks, and site-specific safety briefings.
  • Promote and enforce company Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) standards.
  • Maintain compliance with customer access, security, and critical infrastructure requirements.
  • Support and drive a culture of safety accountability across all field personnel and subcontractors.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Construction Management, Telecommunications, Engineering Technology, or a related field; equivalent experience considered.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience managing fiber optic construction, splicing, or telecommunications infrastructure projects.
  • Extensive knowledge of:
    • Ribbon fusion splicing
    • Fiber optic network deployment
    • Fiber testing and commissioning
    • Data center fiber infrastructure
    • High-count backbone cable installations
  • Experience supporting hyperscale, cloud, enterprise, or colocation data center projects preferred.
  • Strong understanding of fiber network architectures, fiber distribution systems, dark fiber networks, and optical transport infrastructure.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, splice matrices, and fiber network designs.
  • Knowledge of industry standards including TIA, BICSI, NEC, ANSI, and customer-specific data center requirements.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, scheduling, and customer service skills.
  • PMP, BICSI, RCDD, CFOT, FOA, or related industry certifications preferred.
