What is a C embedded software engineer?

C Embedded Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain software written in the C programming language for embedded systems. These systems are specialized computing devices that perform dedicated functions within larger mechanical or electrical systems, such as automotive controllers, medical devices, or IoT devices. Working remotely, these engineers collaborate with cross-functional teams to write efficient, reliable code that interacts directly with hardware, often optimizing for performance and memory constraints. Their expertise covers areas like real-time operating systems, firmware development, and hardware-software integration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a C embedded software engineer remote?

To thrive as a C Embedded Software Engineer, you need strong proficiency in C programming, embedded systems development, and a solid understanding of hardware-software integration, usually backed by a degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), real-time operating systems (RTOS), debugging tools, and sometimes certifications like ARM Accredited Engineer are typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective remote communication abilities help engineers stand out in distributed teams. These competencies are crucial for delivering reliable embedded solutions, collaborating effectively in a remote environment, and ensuring efficient product development cycles.

What are some common challenges faced by C embedded software engineers working remotely, and how can they be addressed?

C Embedded Software Engineers working remotely often face challenges such as limited access to physical hardware for testing, coordinating with cross-functional teams across different time zones, and ensuring effective communication of complex technical issues. These challenges can be mitigated by using remote debugging tools, simulation environments, and maintaining regular virtual meetings with team members. Establishing a clear workflow and documentation practices also helps streamline collaboration and ensures project milestones are met efficiently.

What is the difference between C Embedded Software Engineer Remote vs C Firmware Developer?

AspectC Embedded Software Engineer RemoteC Firmware Developer
CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Engineering or related field; experience with embedded systemsBachelor's in Electrical or Computer Engineering; embedded programming skills
Work EnvironmentRemote, collaborative teams, software development focusOn-site or remote, hardware interaction, firmware development
Industry UsageConsumer electronics, automotive, IoTEmbedded devices, industrial equipment, consumer gadgets
Search & ComparisonOften compared for embedded software roles; similar skill setsRelated but more hardware-focused; often searched together

The main difference is that a C Embedded Software Engineer Remote primarily develops software for embedded systems remotely, focusing on coding and testing. A C Firmware Developer often works closely with hardware, developing low-level firmware, sometimes on-site. Both roles require similar credentials and industry experience, but their work environments and focus areas differ slightly.

Job description

Fuse Energy is an energy startup on a mission to make energy abundant and affordable, fast. We combine first-principles thinking with cutting-edge technology to build a radically better energy system.
We've raised over $200M from top-tier investors including Balderton, Lakestar, Accel, Creandum, Lowercarbon, Ribbit, 20VC, Hummingbird and Collaborative Fund, alongside strategic angels including Nico Rosberg and GPs behind Meta, Revolut, Spotify and Uber.
We're building a fully integrated energy company: developing our own solar, batteries and other generation projects, building our own hardware, improving and developing grid infrastructure, trading power in real time, using AI across the business, and installing distributed energy in homes. By selling directly to consumers we cut out the middleman, lower costs and pass the savings on to our customers.
We're looking for an Embedded Software Engineer in the US to help design, build and scale the connected hardware powering our fleet of distributed energy devices. This hands-on remote role spans embedded systems, networking, device security and fleet connectivity from prototype through to deployment: resilient connectivity, secure provisioning and robust telemetry across a growing fleet of devices. You'll shape how our devices connect, communicate and evolve securely at scale, working closely with firmware, hardware and backend teams to deliver production-ready systems.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain connectivity across Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Thread, Zigbee and BLE
  • Build and optimise secure, reliable device messaging using protocols such as MQTT, CoAP, HTTP or WebSockets, and support device time synchronisation (NTP/PTP)
  • Contribute to secure boot flows, key and certificate provisioning, and hardware-backed device identity using TPMs or secure elements
  • Build and maintain signed firmware update pipelines, including OTA update and rollback, and support security best practices across the device lifecycle
  • Integrate devices with cloud IoT platforms and backend services, and improve telemetry, health monitoring and observability for deployed devices
  • Support reliable field operation, debugging fleet issues and improving resilience
  • Support testing and validation for safety, EMC, radio and related requirements, and help prepare test plans and certification artefacts
  • Work closely with firmware, hardware, power electronics, mechanical and software teams, contributing to design reviews, documentation and interface specifications

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
  • 2+ years building connected embedded products, or strong relevant industry/project experience
  • Good proficiency in C/C++ for embedded systems, with experience of RTOS environments such as Zephyr or FreeRTOS
  • Experience with Python for testing, tooling or automation
  • Solid understanding of device connectivity and networking fundamentals, including IP networking and common transport/application protocols
  • Experience implementing or supporting secure device communications using TLS, certificates or device provisioning workflows
  • Familiarity with firmware update systems, bootloaders or CI/CD workflows for embedded software
  • Practical debugging experience using lab and software tools such as logic analysers, protocol analysers, network sniffers or observability platforms
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work across hardware and software boundaries
  • Bonus: low-power wireless (Thread, Zigbee, BLE); cloud IoT services on AWS, Azure or GCP; secure boot, TPMs, secure elements or hardware attestation; EMC/RF testing, antenna bring-up or factory test; awareness of standards such as IEC 62443, ETSI EN 303 645, ISO 27001 or GDPR; industrial, energy or other distributed device deployments

Benefits
  • Competitive salary and eligibility for equity
  • Biannual bonus scheme
  • Fully expensed tech to match your needs
  • Private health insurance
  • Breakfast and dinner allowance for office-based employees

As we hire globally, benefits vary by location.
