Yard Worker Job Description

Job Summary

The Yard Worker is responsible for maintaining a safe, organized, and efficient building materials yard while providing excellent service to customers and delivery personnel. This position plays a key role in receiving, storing, loading, and unloading brick, block, stone, pavers, masonry supplies, and other construction materials. The Yard Worker also assists with inventory management, equipment operation, and maintaining a clean, well-organized facility.
The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-conscious, physically capable of performing demanding outdoor work, and committed to delivering quality service in a fast-paced environment. This position requires standing for extended periods, lifting up to 50 pounds regularly (and heavier materials with equipment assistance), and working in varying weather conditions.
Essential Responsibilities

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe yard by removing debris, organizing inventory, and ensuring aisles and loading areas remain accessible.
  • Receive, inspect, unload, and stock incoming shipments of brick, block, natural stone, pavers, bagged masonry products, and other building materials.
  • Safely load customer vehicles, contractor trucks, flatbeds, trailers, and company delivery trucks using forklifts, skid steers, pallet jacks, and other material-handling equipment.
  • Verify orders for accuracy before loading and ensure materials are properly secured for transport.
  • Assist customers and drivers with locating and loading products while providing courteous, professional service.
  • Perform routine inspections and basic maintenance of forklifts, skid loaders, and other yard equipment, reporting mechanical issues promptly.
  • Assist with inventory counts, stock rotation, product labeling, and maintaining accurate inventory locations.
  • Organize products to maximize yard efficiency and protect materials from damage.
  • Follow all company safety policies and OSHA regulations, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, high-visibility apparel, and steel-toe footwear.
  • Support warehouse and delivery operations as needed, including preparing customer orders, staging deliveries, and assisting with special projects.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Yard Manager or Operations Manager.
Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a lumber yard, masonry supply yard, building materials distributor, construction supply, warehouse, or related industry preferred.
  • Experience operating forklifts, skid steers, or other material-handling equipment is preferred; certification is a plus.
  • Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds regularly and move heavier materials using proper equipment.
  • Strong work ethic with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Basic understanding of building materials, masonry products, or construction materials is preferred.
  • Ability to work safely in outdoor environments and in all weather conditions.
  • Commitment to maintaining a clean, organized, and efficient work environment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation preferred.
