What is a business systems analyst?
A business systems analyst, or systems analyst, oversees business systems—gathering and analyzing information or data, and determining where to make improvements. The duties of an analyst include working with management and end users to gain an understanding of how the computer system of the business works and how it could work better. They oversee how each new requirement or piece of functionality fits into the overall business process.
What is the difference between Business Systems Analyst vs Business Analyst?
| Aspect | Business Systems Analyst | Business Analyst |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Focus | Analyzing and improving IT systems and software solutions | Analyzing business processes and requirements for overall organizational improvements |
| Required Skills | Technical knowledge, systems analysis, software testing | Business process modeling, stakeholder communication, requirements gathering |
| Work Environment | IT departments, software development teams | Business units, project management teams |
| Certifications | CBAP, CCBA, or relevant IT certifications | CBAP, PMI-PBA, or business analysis certifications |
While both roles involve analyzing and improving business processes, the Business Systems Analyst primarily focuses on IT systems and software solutions, working closely with technical teams. The Business Analyst has a broader scope, concentrating on overall business needs and processes across departments. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job role.
