How does a business risk manager typically collaborate with other departments to address organizational risks?

As a Business Risk Manager, cross-functional collaboration is a key part of the role. You’ll regularly work with departments such as finance, compliance, operations, and IT to identify potential risks, assess their impact, and develop mitigation strategies. This often involves facilitating risk assessment workshops, sharing reports, and ensuring that risk controls are integrated into business processes. Effective communication and relationship-building skills are essential, as you’ll act as a bridge between senior management and operational teams to align risk management efforts with organizational goals.

What is the difference between Business Risk Manager vs Risk Analyst?

Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills help you effectively identify, mitigate, and communicate risks across an organization. These competencies are crucial for proactively managing threats, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting the long-term stability and success of the business.

  • Champion and implement Asset Strategies in alignment with equipment criticality and business needs.
  • Support development and execution of the 3-year Reliability Improvement Plan, including Asset Availability performance history and improvement goals related to Equipment Reliability.
  • Select the appropriate Risk Management Strategy or Alternative Failure Management Strategy and develops / implements Equipment Maintenance Strategies (EMS's) for each piece of critical equipment and generic EMSs for BOP equipment.
  • Support PPM Coordinator for reviews of existing plans for effectiveness and applicability based on the Risk Management Strategy, Alternative Failure Management Strategy, vendor information, RCM tools, historical equipment reliability issues, results of PPM, etc. Add, delete, and/or modify existing PPM to eliminate low value PPM on BOP equipment and effectively manage risk on critical equipment. Note: Include PPM services as required on parts and spare equipment to ensure warehoused part / equipment quality is maintained during storage (e.g. shaft rotation, motor heater check).
  • Evaluate and implement available Equipment Condition Monitoring techniques and new technology to improve productivity, effectiveness, and value of equipment condition monitoring program.
  • Support PPM Coordinator to ensure that documentation of findings of PPM and Corrective Maintenance activities are properly documented in CMMS so that evaluations can be done.

  • Perform value engineering activities for projects, design, Reliability / Maintenance input, PMs, BOMs, equipment selection, criticality, etc.
  • Ensure new equipment is integrated into appropriate systems, tools, processes, strategies, etc. prior to being put into Service.
  • Perform periodic gap assessments between the Asset Reliability Plan, Equipment Maintenance Strategies and PPM plans to identify gaps vs. current reliability performance, cost and asset availability. Identify and implement corrective actions / improvements to eliminate low value PPM (e.g. extend intervals between PPM) or other work while effectively managing risk in terms of mechanical integrity, EHS, production, maintenance cost, etc.
  • Implement periodic plant equipment / facility audits to proactively monitor plant condition and prevent unplanned deterioration of assets.
  • Support PPM Coordinator to optimize spare parts / equipment inventory.
  • Champion use of Management of Change process for changes, modifications, deletions to equipment, materials, parts, consumables and related Operating Discipline.
  • Provide technical expertise to plant personnel on troubleshooting failures, repairs, and evaluate whether equipment is designed to meet its intended or existing service conditions.
  • For equipment that is critical for the process, ensure that work requests include engineering input on repair details such as clearances, tolerances, materials of construction, welding procedures, etc.
  • Ensure repairs, repair techniques, and equipment-specific training are made available and documented.
  • Support development of Maintenance & Operating procedures (i.e. proper steps for starting / stopping a pump, etc.).
  • Serve as a technical resource to the planner and crafts as needed to ensure standards are followed.
  • During development of turnaround work, provide input on development of work orders particularly on critical equipment requiring Engineering review or input.
