What is a business programmer analyst?

Business Programmer Analysts are professionals who combine technical programming skills with business analysis expertise. They work to understand an organization's business needs and translate them into effective software solutions. Their responsibilities typically include gathering requirements, designing and coding applications, testing software, and ensuring that IT solutions align with business objectives. Business Programmer Analysts act as a bridge between business stakeholders and IT teams, helping to improve processes and support decision-making through technology.

How does a business programmer analyst typically collaborate with stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions?

A Business Programmer Analyst often acts as a bridge between business teams and IT departments, regularly meeting with stakeholders to gather detailed requirements and clarify project goals. They translate these business needs into technical specifications, ensuring that proposed software solutions align with organizational objectives. Effective communication and documentation skills are crucial, as the analyst must frequently present findings, provide updates, and adjust plans based on stakeholder feedback. This collaborative approach helps ensure successful project outcomes and fosters a shared understanding across teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a business programmer analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Business Programmer Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, programming proficiency (often in SQL, Python, or Java), and a solid understanding of business processes, typically supported by a degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field. Familiarity with data modeling tools, database management systems, and business intelligence platforms is commonly required, along with certifications such as CBAP or PMP being advantageous. Exceptional problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and the capacity to collaborate between technical and non-technical stakeholders are crucial soft skills. These competencies are important because they enable you to bridge the gap between IT and business, ensuring technical solutions effectively address organizational needs.

Job description

Miller International, Inc., designer of Cinch® and Cruel Girl®, is seeking its newest team member for our Denver, Colorado, office!

Our next Business Systems Analyst will serve as a primary liaison between business and technology teams, translating business needs into scalable system solutions. Analyzes processes, gathers and documents requirements, and collaborates with business users, technical teams, vendors, and senior leadership to implement enhancements, improve operational efficiency, support data-driven decision-making, and ensure successful technology adoption. This role carries a strong hands-on emphasis on Power BI development and SQL-based data analysis in support of enterprise reporting and analytics. Reporting is the core function of this position, spanning the company’s BlueCherry ERP and Microsoft Dynamics environments.

At Miller International, our employees enjoy a fun, casual, and laid-back atmosphere. If you have experience gathering requirements, analyzing business needs, supporting enterprise applications, and translating complex challenges into practical solutions, this is an excellent opportunity to make a meaningful impact while growing your career with a company that values innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

We want to hear from you if you possess the following skills, abilities, and qualifications:

This position is in-office only.

Salary: $80,000 - $100,000 Annually

As a Business System Analyst, you would be responsible for:

  • Partner with management to understand operational needs, identify process improvement opportunities, and recommend technology solutions
  • Gather, document, analyze, and validate business, functional, and technical requirements
  • Develop and maintain Power BI reports, dashboards, KPIs, and data visualizations (including data models, DAX measures, and Power Query transformations) to support business decision-making
  • Write, optimize, and maintain SQL queries, views, and stored procedures to support data extraction, validation, integrations, and reporting
  • Design, build, and maintain operational and analytical reports from the BlueCherry ERP, developing deep familiarity with its data structures, tables, and reporting capabilities
  • Support the migration from on-premises Microsoft Dynamics to Dynamics 365 (cloud), including reporting continuity, data validation, and API-based integration between Dynamics 365 and BlueCherry
  • Create and maintain process flows, user stories, business requirements documents (BRDs), functional specifications, and system documentation
  • Act as a liaison between business users, developers, vendors, and technical teams throughout the solution lifecycle
  • Support enterprise application implementations, upgrades, integrations, and enhancements
  • Collaborate with technical teams on data integrations, system interfaces, workflow automation, and reporting solutions
  • Coordinate and support user acceptance testing (UAT), defect tracking, and validation of system changes
  • Assist with release planning, deployment activities, and post-implementation support
  • Analyze business processes and recommend improvements that increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability
  • Implement and manage Power BI row-level security (RLS), object-level security (OLS), workspace roles, app audiences, and dataset/report permissions in alignment with governance standards
  • Support data governance, data quality initiatives, and process standardization efforts
  • Facilitate meetings, requirements workshops, and discussions to drive project outcomes.
  • Provide end-user training, documentation, and support as needed.
  • Monitor system performance and collaborate with support teams to resolve issues and improve user experience
  • Other tasks assigned

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Analytics, or related field.
  • 5+ years of Business Systems Analysis, Business Analysis, Product Ownership, Data Analysis, or related experience.
  • Experience gathering and documenting business and functional requirements.
  • Experience supporting enterprise business applications, reporting platforms, or data solutions.
  • Strong understanding of business process analysis and process improvement methodologies.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience developing in Power BI (data modeling, DAX, Power Query/M) and writing advanced SQL (complex joins, CTEs, window functions, query optimization).
  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly learn unfamiliar ERP systems and their underlying data models; prior BlueCherry (CGS) experience is not expected but is a strong plus.
  • Experience supporting testing, UAT, and production deployments.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively with cross-functional teams.

Other Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting ERP, CRM, PLM, Supply Chain, Retail, Finance, Procurement, Inventory, or Manufacturing systems.
  • Microsoft Dynamics 365 experience strongly preferred — particularly reporting, data migration, or API integration work supporting a move from on-premises Dynamics (e.g., Dynamics SL) to Dynamics 365 cloud.
  • Experience with system integrations, APIs, ETL processes, or data migration initiatives.
  • Experience with additional business intelligence and reporting tools beyond Power BI (e.g., SSRS, Tableau).
  • Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300) or equivalent certification is a plus.
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server/T-SQL, Microsoft Fabric, Power BI deployment pipelines, or the Power Platform (Power Automate, Power Apps).
