What does a business process optimization consultant do?

A Business Process Optimization Consultant analyzes a company's existing processes and identifies areas where efficiency, productivity, and quality can be improved. They use various methodologies, such as Lean, Six Sigma, or process mapping, to streamline operations and reduce waste. These consultants work closely with stakeholders to implement changes, monitor results, and ensure that improvements are sustainable. Their ultimate goal is to help organizations operate more effectively and achieve better business outcomes.

About ISI

Illuminative Strategies Inc. (ISI) is an award-winning management consulting firm specializing in business process transformation and organizational change management. We primarily partner with public-sector organizations to solve complex operational challenges, implement meaningful changes, and improve the delivery of critical services.

Headquartered in Springfield, Illinois, our consultants work at the intersection of people, process, and technology, creating practical and sustainable solutions for our clients.

Position Overview

ISI is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Process Optimization Consultant to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will work closely with clients to identify their needs and develop tailored solutions that drive business success. The ideal candidate will possess strong facilitation and analytical skills, with a passion for helping organizations improve their processes and achieve their strategic goals. You will lead defined workstreams, develop actionable insights, and contribute directly to improving business processes, system implementations, and organizational outcomes. This position offers an excellent opportunity for professional growth and development in the consulting field.

Unlike traditional consulting roles, ISI Consultants work across disciplines – including Business Process Redesign, Organizational Change Management, Product Ownership, and Policy – gaining broad exposure and the opportunity to drive end-to-end solutions.

You will be expected to take ownership of your work, operate with sound judgment, and contribute to both client success and team performance. This role requires a collaborative, flexible working style with the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels of an organization.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute defined workstreams within client engagements, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery.
  • Perform detailed process analysis and apply Lean principles to support business transformation initiatives.
  • Develop data-driven insights and translate findings into clear, actionable recommendations.
  • Proactively identify process improvement opportunities, develop and quantify improvement recommendations, and build continuous improvement.
  • Lead process improvement through stakeholder interviews and facilitated sessions to identify cross-functional opportunities and recommend best practices as a solution.
  • Engage with clients as their day-to-day point of contact, supporting meetings, workshops, and presentations, cultivating relationships through exceptional customer service and subject matter expertise.
  • Develop and deliver client-ready materials, including presentations, communications, and recommendations.
  • Support the development of training materials and ensure alignment between process changes and end-user adoption.
  • Perform detailed process analysis and apply Lean principles to support business process transformation initiatives.
  • Organize, analyze, and interpret data from multiple sources to inform decision-making.
  • Collaborate with senior consultants to develop data-driven solutions across the various practices.
  • Participate in project management tasks to ensure timely delivery of solutions.
  • Contribute to business development activities by identifying new opportunities for consulting services.
  • Engage in continuous learning to stay updated on industry trends and best practices.
Requirements:

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with a strong academic record required; graduate degree (MBA, Master’s, etc.) preferred.
  • Three years of experience in consulting or related field.
  • Experience in process improvement and/or change management principles and practices.
  • Experience with business process mapping and baselining data.
  • Excellent analytical and quantitative problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent research skills with the ability to analyze and visualize complex data sets.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex information clearly.
  • Excellent organization, prioritization, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines while producing high-quality work.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse clients and project teams.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies, methodologies, and subject matter quickly.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience or coursework in project management principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with management consulting frameworks and approaches.
  • Knowledge of business development strategies within a consulting environment.
  • Proficient in business consulting techniques, including strategic planning and business analysis.
  • Proficiency with tools such as Visio, PowerBI, Jira, or similar is a plus.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must live, or be willing to relocate, within commuting distance of ISI’s Springfield, Illinois office. Relocation assistance may be available.
  • Must be willing and able to work onsite five days per week.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and automobile insurance that meets Illinois minimum requirements.
