Job Title: Process Innovation Lead
Department: Special Projects
Summary of Position
The Process Innovation Lead diagnoses root causes of business challenges and develops technology-enabled solutions that deliver measurable improvements in efficiency and long-term business value. You'll analyze operational and business problems using technical investigation, stakeholder engagement, and data analysis-then design and build prototypes that address underlying issues.
This is a hands-on technical role requiring engineering expertise, problem-solving discipline, and visionary thinking about how technology can improve business processes. You'll personally develop prototypes and proof-of-concepts, validate concepts through iterative testing, and collaborate with business owners and IT to ensure solutions address real needs. You'll leverage modern tools-including data platforms (Snowflake), analytics (Power BI), AI-assisted development, and automation-to accelerate prototyping and solve complex problems. You'll work directly with business stakeholders to understand their operational challenges and desired outcomes, then hand off validated prototypes to IT for long-term development and ownership.
Success in this role means rapidly moving from problem diagnosis to working prototype, validating through iteration, and transitioning solutions to IT teams who will scale and maintain them.
Primary Job Responsibilities
  • Analyze Root Causes Using Technical & Business Lens (25% of time)
  • Investigate operational and business problems through technical analysis, stakeholder interviews, and data investigation. Work directly with business owners to understand their operational challenges, desired outcomes, and the inputs and outputs they're trying to improve. Distinguish between surface-level symptoms and underlying root causes. Ask diagnostic questions to uncover what the business is actually trying to achieve. Analyze technical systems, data flows, and process constraints. Document findings in a clear problem statement that articulates the real issue and why it matters.
  • Design and Develop Technology Solutions (45% of time)
  • Design and build solutions that solve root causes through technical innovation. Evaluate build vs. buy vs. partner options; plan to personally develop and prototype custom solutions where appropriate. Translate business requirements into technical solutions that address operational challenges. When commercial solutions fit, recommend them; when custom development is needed, lead the development and prototyping effort. Use modern development tools and data platforms to accelerate solution delivery.
  • Develop and Deploy Working Prototypes (15% of time)
  • Rapidly develop functional prototypes, proof-of-concepts, and minimum viable products in code to validate concepts and demonstrate value. Deploy prototypes in working environments, gather user feedback, and iterate based on results. Use prototyping to prove both technical feasibility and business impact before handoff to IT for long-term development and ownership.
  • Enable Cross-Functional Adoption (10% of time)
  • Collaborate with IT teams to transition validated prototypes for long-term development and ownership. Provide business context, technical documentation, and operational requirements to support IT's ability to scale and maintain solutions. Work with business owners to ensure adoption and integration of solutions into daily workflows. Identify and address adoption barriers. Foster a culture of continuous improvement and experimentation.
  • Document and Share Learnings (5% of time)
  • Document the technical approach, business rationale, and lessons learned from each solution. Create playbooks and templates that help the organization apply similar thinking to future problems. Ensure technical documentation supports adoption and IT handoff.

Education & Experience
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering (Petroleum, Mechanical, Software, Chemical, or related discipline)
  • 5+ years of professional oil and gas experience in Production, Operations, Reservoir, Facilities, Drilling and Completions, or related technical field
  • Hands-on experience with data analysis, scripting, software development, or automation tools
  • Demonstrated ability to translate operational problems into technical solutions
  • Experience working cross-functionally with IT, data teams, or technical stakeholders
  • Ability to own technical workstreams independently from concept through deployment
  • Comfort with ambiguity; ability to design and validate solutions with incomplete information
  • Preferred:
  • Proficiency with Python, SQL, or similar scripting and data languages
  • Experience with data platforms (Snowflake, Databricks) or business intelligence tools (Power BI)
  • Hands-on experience developing software applications, automation tools, or prototypes
  • Comfort with AI/automation tools and understanding of how emerging technologies can solve operational problems
  • Familiarity with collaborative development tools and modern software practices

Key Skills & Attributes
Technical Problem-Solving
  • You translate operational and business problems into technical requirements and build solutions that address root causes. You're comfortable working with data, code, APIs, and emerging technologies to create measurable improvements.
Prototyping & Iteration Mindset
  • You move quickly from concept to working prototype. You validate assumptions through building and testing, not just planning and discussion. You iterate based on results and user feedback.
Root Cause Analysis
  • You dig into why problems exist, not just what symptoms appear. You use data, technical investigation, and stakeholder engagement to distinguish between surface issues and underlying causes.
Systems Thinking with Technical Depth
  • You understand how technical solutions interact with operational workflows, data flows, and organizational systems. You design solutions that integrate across business functions and don't create new problems.
Cross-Functional Fluency (with Technical Authority)
  • You understand how operations, IT, and data teams think. You speak credibly to business owners, technologists, and operations leaders. Your technical judgment earns respect across functions.
Precision & Clarity
  • You distinguish between facts, assumptions, and hypotheses. You flag uncertainty and document both what you know and what you need to learn. You explain complex technical solutions clearly to non-technical audiences.
Comfort with Modern Tools & Emerging Technologies
  • You adapt quickly to new platforms, tools, and technologies. You see AI, automation, and modern development practices as accelerators for problem-solving, not obstacles. You're curious about emerging tools and how they can improve your work.
