Senior Corporate Policy Manager

New York, NY • On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 15 days ago

Job description

As Senior Corporate Policy Manager, you serve a critical role in Compassion's central objective to improve animal welfare and environmental sustainability in our food system: your core responsibility is to establish and cultivate strong relationships with major food companies. Leveraging internal expertise and resources and drawing upon your own professional experience and knowledge of the food industry, you advise CIWF's food company partners on animal welfare best practices for their supply chains and guide them through implementation.

Above all else, you're a people person. You enjoy meeting new people and find it easy to connect in conversation. You're ready to travel frequently for in-person meetings and to attend conferences to learn about industry and meet new corporate leaders and potential food industry partners. Whether or not you have a formal sales background, you are adept at providing helpful, compelling information to guide others to make business decisions and changes to fulfill their goals.

When you're not traveling, meeting virtually with food companies, or maintaining relationships via email, you serve as a collaborative member of the Corporate Policy team, helping build strategies and leading or contributing to projects and resources to assist partner companies. Besides excellent verbal and written communication skills, you have a sharp eye for accuracy and keeping detailed company records updated in real time.

While collaboration is key to this role, it also requires a high level of self-motivation and independence. You have the experience and drive to set and follow through on your relationship-building strategy with minimal guidance. You're also a quick learner when it comes to both the details of animal welfare issues and the broader industry landscape, staying up to date on industry news and taking the initiative to deepen your understanding of the nuances of farm animal welfare.

Food Company Engagement and Networking 60%

  • Engage and establish strong, senior relationships with leading US food companies to promote the importance of animal welfare and environmental sustainability goals that lead to policy commitments, annual reporting, implementation plans, collaborative work, and ultimately tangible progress toward those goals.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records for company accounts, engagement, and progress.
  • Develop the corporate policy team's contact network.
  • Create and deliver compelling presentations to educate food business leaders about welfare topics and improved sourcing opportunities
  • Research key information about top food companies and the broader industry.

Food Company and Corporate Policy Team Support 20%

  • Cross-team collaboration and support, such as website content writing, media interviews, information requests, etc.
  • Support the execution of food business events as needed.

 Representation of CIWF 15%

  • Represent CIWF at industry conferences and events and in conversation with other stakeholders and industry groups.

 Management and Thought Leadership 5%

  • Provide input for US Corporate Policy strategic planning, shaping the rationale for and execution of plans.
  • Potential to manage direct and indirect reports as assigned. Recruit and develop staff as needed.

Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience.
  • Work Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years' work experience in a related field.
  • Mission-alignment: Commitment to CIWF's mission and objectives.
  • Relationship management: Skilled at forming and maintaining strong working relationships, even from "cold" outreach, such as sales. Experience in managing complex projects with external partners.
  • Personability: Friendly, positive demeanor.
  • Communication and stakeholder influence: Excellent and persuasive verbal and written communication skills.
  • Travel: Ability and willingness to travel as needed, up to approximately 20%
  • Self-motivation and organization: Drive to work independently and efficiently, managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Research and data management: Skilled at locating critical and hard-to-find food industry-related information relevant to outreach and to support partner companies. The ability and commitment to maintain records consistently and with a high degree of detail and accuracy, using a CRM (Salesforce), spreadsheets, and other digital tools. Previous CRM experience is not a requirement, but the ability to learn to use a CRM and other digital tools is.
  • Expertise and interest: Deep interest in farm animal welfare and sustainability. Subject matter expertise in the food industry, farm animal welfare and food systems sustainability and/OR the ability to educate oneself about these issues quickly. See preferred qualifications for related subject matter expertise.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in related field.
  • A sales background, or similar.
  • Relevant subject matter experience and expertise, such as: (a) Corporate work experience, especially in or related to the food industry. (b) Strong knowledge of or experience working within the US food industry, particularly in areas relating to ESG/CSR, supply chain/procurement, marketing or communications, or senior sales roles. (c) Experience engaging with corporate sustainability teams, investors, lenders, or supply chain stakeholders. (d) Familiarity with animal agriculture, food systems, regenerative agriculture, and corporate animal welfare commitments.

This role is remote and we welcome candidates living anywhere in the U.S. As part of a global organization and as a position that will meet frequently with businesses on the East Coast, the role will require Eastern or Central Time Zone working hours.

Salary: Up to $80K annually for well qualified candidates
