The Service Policy Intern will support the Service Policy team in ensuring the consistent interpretation and application of tariff rules, electric standards, administrative instructions (policies), and regulatory requirements. The intern will gain exposure to utility operations, regulatory compliance, customer project support, and process improvement initiatives while working closely with Service Policy Analysts across all Opco's and cross-functional teams. The role provides hands-on experience with policy administration, data analysis, documentation management, auditing activities, and continuous improvement projects. There will be a focus on technology initiatives and automation advancements as we focus on driving efficiencies through technology. Intern could office out of MN (St. Paul or Minneapolis) or WI (Eau Claire or Amery).

Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with research and documentation related to tariff rules, administrative instructions, standards, and regulatory requirements.

  • Support the review and organization of Service Policy resources, SharePoint content, forms, and process documentation.

  • Participate in process improvement efforts, including workflow documentation, automation opportunities, and operational efficiency projects.

  • Support Service Policy Analysts with customer project reviews and exception tracking.

  • Help develop training materials, presentations, and communications for internal stakeholders.

  • Collaborate with Design, Engineering, Operations, Regulatory, and Customer teams to gather information and support business objectives.

  • Perform research and data analysis related to rates, standards, policies, and emerging business needs.


This position is for a May 24, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship's initial term based on the candidate's successful performance and Xcel Energy's business needs.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Current student, Freshman or higher

  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Business Administration, Project Management, Regulatory Affairs, Supply Chain Management, etc.

  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • GPA of 3.0 or higher.

  • Completed coursework in business administration, project management, public policy, regulatory affairs, or related disciplines.

  • Experience using Excel, SAP, Business Objects, Power BI for data analysis, reporting, or process improvement projects.

  • Familiarity with SharePoint, Power BI, Power Automate, Power Apps, Copilot, or other Microsoft data and automation tools.

  • Interest in utility operations, regulatory compliance, customer programs, or energy industry policy.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to document processes and maintain accurate records.

  • Experience working collaboratively in team-based projects.

  • Ability to learn complex policies, procedures, and business processes quickly.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office365 applications, particularly Copilot, SharePoint, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Teams.

  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail.
