The Director, Business Development Operations and Chief of Staff is a high-impact leadership role that partners directly with the Executive Vice President of Business Development and the Business Development Leadership Team to drive operational excellence, organizational effectiveness, strategic alignment, and execution across the global Business Development organization. The position serves as the operational backbone of the Business Development organization, helping establish priorities, drive execution, coordinate complex cross-functional activities, support leadership decision-making, and ensure commitments are delivered with consistency and accountability. In addition to leading the day-to-day operations of the function, the individual will gain unparalleled exposure to many of the company’s highest-profile strategic priorities, including transactions, partnerships, divestments, portfolio strategy, Executive Management discussions, and Board-level interactions. As a member of the Business Development Leadership Team, this role offers a front-row seat to how growth strategies are developed, opportunities are evaluated, and critical enterprise decisions are made. It is intentionally designed as both a leadership role and a development opportunity for a high-potential individual seeking to broaden their understanding of Business Development and the wider pharmaceutical enterprise while maintaining meaningful ownership and accountability for business outcomes.

How You’ll Spend Your DayStrategic Partnership and Business Operations
  • Serve as a trusted business partner to the EVP, Business Development and a member of the Business Development Leadership Team.
  • Lead the operating cadence of the Business Development organization, including leadership team meetings, governance forums, business reviews, and priority-setting processes.
  • Help translate strategic priorities into actionable plans, clear accountabilities, and measurable outcomes.
  • Ensure leadership discussions are well structured, decision-oriented, and linked to effective follow-through.
  • Drive visibility, coordination, and execution across Business Development functions while preserving accountability within each team.
  • Identify and implement improvements that enhance efficiency, transparency, communication, and organizational performance.
Governance, Planning and Organizational Effectiveness
  • Support annual planning, goal setting, business reviews, and organizational priorities across Business Development.
  • Drive initiatives that improve teamwork, communication, decision-making, execution, onboarding, engagement, and organization-wide effectiveness.
  • Help ensure the organization remains aligned around priorities, resources, timelines, and performance expectations.
  • Foster a high-performance culture focused on accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Your Skills and ExperienceEducation
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • MBA, advanced scientific degree, pharmacy degree, or other relevant graduate degree preferred.
Experience
  • 10+ years of experience in Business Development, Strategy, Corporate Development, Commercial Operations, Consulting, Program Management, Operations, or related functions within pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare, or life sciences industries.
  • Strong understanding of the pharmaceutical development and commercialization process.
  • Experience working in complex, matrixed organizations with senior leadership teams.
  • Demonstrated success leading cross-functional initiatives without direct authority.
  • Experience developing executive-level presentations, business analyses, operating plans, and strategic recommendations.
  • Exposure to pharmaceutical business development, partnerships, licensing, M&A, divestments, valuation, or alliance management preferred.

Salary Range

The annual starting salary for this position is between $173,440 – 216,800 annually. Factors which may affect starting salary within this range and level of role may include geography/market, skills, education, experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
