What is a business controls manager?

Business Controls Managers are professionals responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining internal controls within an organization to ensure compliance with regulations, policies, and best practices. They identify potential risks, monitor business processes, and recommend improvements to safeguard assets and enhance operational efficiency. Their role often involves working closely with different departments to promote a strong control environment and prevent fraud or financial misstatements.

How does a business controls manager typically collaborate with other departments to ensure compliance and mitigate risk?

A Business Controls Manager works closely with various departments such as Finance, Operations, and IT to identify process risks and implement controls that align with company policies and regulatory requirements. Collaboration often involves conducting risk assessments, facilitating training sessions, and regularly reviewing control effectiveness with stakeholders. Open communication and cross-functional teamwork are essential, as the manager must balance business objectives with compliance standards. This role often acts as a bridge between audit teams and business units, ensuring that control recommendations are practical and effectively adopted.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a business controls manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Business Controls Manager, you need a strong background in risk management, internal controls, compliance, and a relevant degree such as in finance, accounting, or business administration. Familiarity with control frameworks (like COSO or SOX), audit tools, and data analysis systems is typically required, along with professional certifications such as CPA, CIA, or CISA. Exceptional analytical thinking, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help in identifying risks and collaborating across departments. These skills ensure robust control environments, regulatory compliance, and the protection of organizational assets.
