How much do business consultant intern jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 1, 2026, the average hourly pay for business consultant intern in the United States is $17.32, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.14 and $18.99 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Is 30 too old to get into consulting?

Business Consultant Intern roles are often targeted at students or early-career individuals, but age is not a strict barrier. Many consulting firms value relevant skills, experience, and a strong work ethic over age, and career changers can successfully transition into consulting with appropriate training and networking.

What does a business consultant intern do?

A business consultant intern supports consulting teams by conducting research, analyzing data, and assisting in developing strategies to improve client operations. They often participate in meetings, prepare reports, and gain exposure to project management tools. The role provides practical experience in business analysis and problem-solving within a professional environment.

What types of projects and tasks can a Business Consultant Intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Business Consultant Intern, you will typically assist full-time consultants in conducting market research, analyzing data, preparing client presentations, and developing strategic recommendations. Interns are often involved in both independent tasks and collaborative team meetings, gaining hands-on experience with real client cases. You'll likely be expected to communicate findings clearly, contribute ideas during brainstorming sessions, and support the implementation of solutions. This role provides exposure to a variety of industries and business challenges, offering valuable learning opportunities and insights into the consulting process.

Can an intern be a consultant?

A Business Consultant Intern is typically in a learning or entry-level position and does not usually perform the full responsibilities of a professional consultant. Interns often support consulting teams with research and analysis but are not designated as independent consultants. Gaining experience and skills during the internship can prepare individuals for future consulting roles, but the title of 'consultant' is generally reserved for fully qualified professionals.

How much do consulting firms pay interns?

Business Consultant Interns at consulting firms typically earn between $15 and $30 per hour, depending on the firm, location, and level of experience. Some firms also offer stipends or hourly wages that reflect industry standards for internships in business consulting roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Business Consultant Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Business Consultant Intern, you need strong analytical abilities, problem-solving skills, and a solid foundation in business concepts, often supported by progress toward a degree in business, economics, or a related field. Familiarity with data analysis tools like Excel, PowerPoint, and sometimes CRM or project management software is typically expected. Excellent communication, teamwork, and adaptability help interns stand out when engaging with clients and colleagues. These skills are important because they enable interns to contribute meaningful insights, support project goals, and build professional relationships in a fast-paced consulting environment.
