Houston County Board Of Education Job Description

Classified Positions

Summary and Relationship to the Curriculum: All classified positions will strengthen the delivery of instruction to support the District's mission. This position provides safe and timely pupil transportation services to and from home and school.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Operates a school bus, to include loading and unloading, in a safe and timely manner in order to transport students in accordance with State and Federal laws and regulations.
  2. Ensures proper loading and securement of wheelchairs and other equipment as required.
  3. Manages student behavior on the bus and communicates with parents as Refers infractions to the appropriate personnel.
  4. Completes inspections prior to and after each operation and reports deficiencies immediately according to established procedures.
  5. Completes post-trip student-checks after each route following District procedures.
  6. Complies with assigned pick up and drop off locations.
  7. Continually updates route sheets and student rosters for accurate records.
  8. Reports all accidents and emergencies immediately as outlined in department and District procedures and policies.
  9. Maintains external and internal cleanliness of bus for safe and comfortable conditions.
  10. Completes reports and training as required.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  1. Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED). One to two years of experience driving a school bus or other vehicle requiring a commercial driver's license (CDL) is preferred.
  2. Certificate or License Required: Valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License, Class A or B with a Passenger and School Bus endorsement is required. Minimum of three (3) verifiable and consecutive years as a motor vehicle operator. Must be a minimum of twenty-one (21) years of age.
  3. Language Skills: Must have ability to read and comprehend job specific technical information, simple instructions, short correspondence, memos and position specific manuals. Must have ability to write correspondence and reports. Must have ability to effectively articulate and present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  4. Mathematical Skills: Must have the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
  5. Reasoning Ability: Must be able to facilitate the problem solving processes. Must have ability to synthesize workable options from given facts, and assist in the development of workable solutions.
  6. Technical Ability: Must have considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office and other job specified technologies.
  7. Customer Service Skills: Must be able to interact effectively with colleagues, administrators, teachers, staff members, students using tactful yet effective skills. Must collaborate well with others and display a cooperative attitude. Must be service oriented and actively seek ways to assist others.

Professional Requirements: Must serve as a role model to students. Appropriate dress and grooming consistent with established standards required.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must pass the Georgia Department of Education Bus Driver Physical within 60 days prior to the first day of employment. To be considered for reemployment for any ensuing year, must pass the Georgia Department of Education Bus Driver Physical not more than 60 days before the beginning of the school year and as often thereafter as the District deems necessary.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, and lift. Occasionally, the employee must crouch or kneel. The employee must be able to exert or lift up to 50 pounds, with occasional lifting of up to 75 pounds.

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Frequent travel involves exposure to traffic and outdoor elements. Travel to home sites, school sites, and other locations is required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently working in outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
