Job Summary

The Substation Technician will provide engineering for the design of substation facilities for voltages up to and including 500 kV. Projects may be for the interconnection of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), renewable generation, solar, wind, or other Distributed Energy Resources (DER). This includes new substations and switch yards, modifications, additions, and upgrades to existing facilities. Substation physical design responsibilities include overall engineering and analysis for new switch yards and substations, additions, and modifications. Includes equipment specifications and procurement support, layout and general arrangements for all major equipment and structures required for high voltage switch yards or substation.


Responsibilities
  • Work safely while assisting in new/existing construction and various tasks such as demolition, site preparation, excavating, backfilling and landscaping, trenching, pole setting, cable labeling, and other substation related tasks such as construction clean-up
  • Read and understand system maps to become knowledgeable in general electric distribution system layout, system substation capacities and load areas, substation circuit feeds, and general system sectionalizing
  • Assist with installing transformer and transformer banks, bus structures and switchgear, lines (underground/overhead), ground grid, control buildings, and other related substation material tasks
  • Able to operate forklifts and maintain a valid forklift certification
  • Will work with man baskets, skid steers, shovels, compactors, back hoes and other industry equipment
  • Frequently work around energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care
  • Maintain company tools in good working order
  • Understands and complies with the Company’s Code of Business Conduct and Ethics
  • Other duties as assigned by Management

Qualifications
  • OSHA 10 and/or 30
  • Obtain and maintain a valid State Class C driver’s license
  • Ability to carry and lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis
  • Ability to learn how to operate construction equipment and use hand tools
  • Ability to work within a physically demanding work environment.
  • MUST possess a Department of Labor (DOL) Journeyman completion certificate. 

Preffered Qualifications 

  • 3-5 years in Substation Tech expereince

This job operates in a field environment. This role routinely requires extended periods of bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, lifting in awkward positions, standing, and twisting. Also, working in inclement weather conditions, such as extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, ice, snow, and wind.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. This position is physically active, with lifting required. Must be able to bend and lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more or 20 inches or less, with the ability to judge distance and space relationships. Precise hand-eye coordination. Ability to identify and distinguish colors.
