JOB TITLE:

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Valid Drivers license

3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board or superintendent may find acceptable
REPORTS TO:
Transportation Director
JOB GOAL:
To transport students to and from school and other sites within designated route(s) and to ensure the safety of the student passengers while in a school vehicle. Employees in this classification receive general supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. This job class is responsible for the safe operation of a school bus and for ensuring the safety of student passengers while meeting established bus schedules. Drivers may be assigned to drive wheelchair busses.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Obeys all traffic laws.
2. Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.
3. Maintains discipline when students are on bus.
4. Reports undisciplined students to the proper authority.
5. Keeps assigned bus clean.
6. Keeps to assigned schedule.
7. Checks bus before each operation for mechanical defects.
8. Notifies the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness.
9. Discharges students only at authorized stops.
10. Exercises responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips.
11. Transports only authorized students.
12. Reports all accidents and completes required reports.
13. Enforces regulations against smoking and eating on the bus.
  1. Drives a school transportation vehicle within a prescribe route(s) in accordance with time schedules; picking up and discharging students at designated stops.
  2. May operate a special ramp bus; loads and unloads students in wheelchairs on and off bus, inspecting wheelchair for operational safety; operates ramp; positions and secures wheelchair in bus.
  3. Transports students and teacher on field trips to various locations; planning necessary route(s) and stops as needed.
  4. Conduct safety and operational inspection of assigned vehicle daily.
  5. Reports needed mechanical repairs when necessary.
  6. Services buses with gas, diesel fuel, and oil; checks and when necessary fills tires and batteries Performs periodical safety drills as required by law; completing necessary reports upon request Maintains cleanliness of vehicle to ensure safe operating condition.
  7. Completes periodic mileage and other reports including passenger counts.
  8. Attends various meetings regarding safety, first aid and training updates as required.
  9. Attends driver training programs to maintain current knowledge of Mississippi Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code as it applies to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of school children.
  10. Operates a two-way radio.
  11. Washes bus as needed.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Hear sounds and recognize the difference between them.

IT IS NOT AS IMPORTANT, BUT STILL NECESSARY, FOR SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS TO BE ABLE TO:
  • Focus on one source of sound and ignore others.
  • See objects in very bright or glaring light.
  • While looking forward, see objects or movements that are off to the side.
  • See differences between colors, shades, and brightness.
  • Use one or two hands to grasp, move, or assemble objects.
  • Choose quickly and correctly among various movements when responding to different signals.
  • See objects in very low light.
  • Determine from which direction a sound came.
  • Use fingers to grasp, move, or assemble very small objects.
  • Use stomach and lower back muscles to support the body for long periods without getting tired.
  • Use muscles to lift, push, pull, or carry heavy objects.
