The New York City of Homeless Services (DHS) is the largest organization in the United States dedicated to preventing and addressing homelessness. In partnership with other City agencies and nonprofit organizations, DHS works to prevent homelessness before it begins, reduce street homelessness, provide temporary shelter, and connect individuals and families to stable housing-all with a focus on accountability, empathy, and equity.
DHS is committed to continuous improvement and employs innovative strategies to deliver high-quality services that support a swift transition from shelter to self-sufficiency. The agency manages hundreds of facilities and operates with a large team as well as a several billion-dollar budget to meet the diverse needs of New Yorkers experiencing homelessness.
The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is recruiting for one (1) Supervisor of Building Maintenance M-I to function as a Building Superintendent who will:
-Manage a variety of maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, and technical support services for several City-owned shelters.
-Coordinate all aspects of facility management, including in-house trades staff and contracted staff. Oversee work order management and estimate project costs. Prepare and evaluate scopes of work and contract specifications.
-Maintain familiarity with building structures, mechanical systems, HVAC, and fire safety.
-Act as the liaison with oversight agencies, including OTDA, DOB, FDNY, HPD, and others during facility inspections.
-Serve as the contract manager for maintenance and repair work at designated locations.
-Advise staff on facility work that may affect work or client areas.
-Perform related projects and other duties at DHS shelters, as assigned.
Hours/Shift: Monday-Friday 9am -5pm

Qualifications

1. Eight years of full-time experience in construction, repair, alteration and/or rehabilitation of multiple dwellings, commercial, industrial or public buildings in the capacity of general contractor, superintendent of construction, procurement specialist, evaluator responsible for cost estimation, or as a field supervisor or as an inspector, at least 18 months of which must have been in a supervisory or administrative capacity involving responsibility for a large number of buildings; or
2. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" above. Education in an accredited college leading toward a baccalaureate degree in engineering, architecture, engineering technology or a closely related field will be accepted on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of four years. However, all candidates must possess at least 18 months of the specialized supervisory or administrative experience described in "1" above.
