What is a building sub?

Building subs, short for building substitutes, are individuals who temporarily fill in for absent staff members in a school building, typically covering for teachers, aides, or other support roles. They maintain classroom instruction and daily routines, ensuring continuity of learning and student safety. Building subs are often assigned to a specific school for a set period, unlike day-to-day substitutes who might work in different buildings as needed.

What does a building sub do?

As a Building Substitute, you will be assigned daily to a specific school and expected to fill in for absent teachers across various grade levels and subjects as needed. Your day may involve quickly adapting to different classroom environments, following prepared lesson plans, managing classroom behavior, and assisting with supervision during lunch or recess. Flexibility and strong communication skills are key, as you’ll frequently collaborate with permanent teachers, administrators, and support staff. This role provides valuable experience in classroom management and school operations, making it a great stepping stone for those considering a long-term teaching career.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a building sub?

To thrive as a Building Substitute Teacher, you generally need a bachelor's degree, a substitute teaching license or certification, and a basic understanding of classroom management. Familiarity with school information systems, online learning platforms, and educational software is often required. Flexibility, strong communication, and the ability to quickly build rapport with students and staff make someone excel in this role. These skills ensure smooth classroom operations, maintain continuity of learning, and foster a positive educational environment during teacher absences.
