Job description

Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) is seeking a Building Enclosure Consultant (Senior Associate) with 10+ years of experience with curtain wall, window wall, and exterior cladding to join our Houston office. This is a doer-manager role. You'll lead envelope investigations, diagnostics, detailing, and rehabilitation projects across contemporary and historic structures - working directly with clients, contractors, and consultants from day one. You'll have a sharp team of associates behind you and direct access to industry-recognized senior leaders across the company.

Responsibilities:
  • Technical project leadership, including applying sound engineering judgment and a deep understanding of governing codes, design guidelines, and industry practices; collaborating with interdisciplinary project teams across WJE; leveraging your expertise for a variety of building envelope systems and materials; preparing technically excellent client deliverables; providing high-quality reviews and oversight of work by others; and self-performing and training others in hands-on field work and diagnostic testing
  • Project management, including project scoping and proposal writing; assembling and managing project teams; maintaining project schedules, budgets, and financials; and managing client expectations and deliverables
  • Mentorship, including exemplifying WJE's culture of shared destiny and knowledge sharing to better the team around you: locally and company-wide, formally and informally, on and off projects, for technical topics and overall career development
  • Contributions to local and company-wide objectives, including proactively fostering new and existing client relationships in pursuit of project work you are excited about; engaging the next generation of WJE professionals; collaborating with practice leaders on knowledge-sharing and training initiatives; and participating in industry organizations, conferences, and technical committees

Qualifications:
  • Registered Architect (RA) or Professional Engineer (PE); other relevant professional certifications (e.g., RBEC, RRC, RWC, REWC) will be considered with significant relevant expertise
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in architecture, architectural engineering, building science, civil engineering, or related field; master's degree preferred
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in building enclosures, including technical consulting and project management, with demonstrated expertise in the evaluation, diagnostic testing, troubleshooting, and detailing of various building envelope, exterior wall, roofing, and waterproofing systems, particularly at the interface of different systems, assemblies, or components. Strong preference for experience in facade engineering and the design and detailing of curtain walls and other modern facade systems. The minimum years of experience may be flexible for candidates who can clearly demonstrate that they are already performing at or above the level of responsibility expected for this position.
  • Applied expertise in hygrothermal principles (i.e., heat, air, and moisture control) across building envelope materials, assemblies, and their interfaces.
  • Excellent technical, graphical, written, and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to travel and attend meetings at various office, field, and construction sites
  • Ability to perform inspections of buildings and other structures, both visually and with instruments
  • Ability to safely work at heights, in confined spaces, and in a variety of occupationally hazardous locations, including outdoors with exposure to temperature extremes
  • Ability to safely use and/or operate ladders, scaffolds, lifts, and other access equipment
  • Ability to lift and carry materials, tools, and other heavy equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Medically fit to utilize respiratory protection devices and other forms of Personal Protective Equipment
  • Ability to drive and safely operate a motor vehicle

A good faith estimate of the annual starting base salary (gross) is in the following range:
$101,550.00 - $169,250.00
