This is an important position involving responsibility for planning, inspecting and supervising the building maintenance and repair program of a large school district. Employees of this class inspect buildings to identify maintenance and repair needs and inspect work in progress and at completion and are responsible for efficient and workman like performance of a variety of building, installing, maintaining and repairing tasks requiring a good knowledge of one or more of the electrical, mechanical or construction trades, such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical repair, welding, sheet metal work, grounds, masonry, heating/air conditioning, sewage facilities maintenance and related trades. General supervision is exercised in choosing methods or procedures.
This title differs from Maintenance Mechanic I in the greater responsibility for proper implementation and completion of a large project, requiring the coordination of many activities or trade skills. The Maintenance Mechanic (Foreman) would be expected to have a higher skill level than Maintenance Mechanic I. The work is reviewed by checking completed work, by periodic spot checks, or by reports to supervisor.
Work is performed under general supervision of the Supervisor of Plant Maintenance or similar administrative head. Direct supervision is exercised over a number of Maintenance Mechanic staff. Does related work as required.Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, plus three (3) years of experience as a skilled workman in one or more of the electrical, mechanical or construction trades.NOTE: Additional experience may be substituted for high school diploma on a year-for-year basis.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Operators License Class 5 or CDL may be required by some jurisdictions
Candidates may be required to pass a physical examination to determine ability to perform manual labor.Plans, schedules and supervises the building maintenance and repair program;Inspects building exteriors and interiors to evaluate maintenance and repair needs;Sets priorities and schedules requests from principals and custodians for building maintenanceand repair work;Issues direct written work orders for repair or replacement of various building systems in one or more of the electrical, mechanical or construction trades;Checks work, time spent and materials used;Monitors and tracks departmental productivity utilizing a Computer Maintenance Management System;May be required to complete daily reports;Set up schedules for a wide variety of facility maintenance repairs; Review and approve timesheets and payroll;Write Purchase Orders for all supplies; Maintain a budget for the Department;Generate work orders and a wide variety of reports on computer; Work with Administrators and the General Public over concerns;Maintains and monitors Department P-Card expenditures and approves purchases.FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONALCHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the common practices, tools terminology and safety precautions of one or more of the electrical, mechanical or construction trades; ability to work from plans, specifications and rough sketches; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to work well with others; demonstrate computer skills; demonstrate strong supervisory skills; demonstrated skill in at least one of the electrical, mechanical or construction trades; good hand and eye coordination; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
