Job description

Summary

Harbor Boating, Inc. is hiring a Marine Technician to support the maintenance and repair of our fleet of commercial passenger vessels.

This is a hands-on position that works directly under the supervision of our full-time Marine Mechanic. The role is a good fit for someone with basic mechanical ability, a strong work ethic, and an interest in building real experience in the marine trades. You will help with routine maintenance, minor repairs, vessel upkeep, parts and tool organization, and maintenance documentation to help keep the fleet safe, reliable, and ready for service.

Do I need to be ABYC-certified, manufacturer-certified, or attend technical school?

No.

Those credentials are helpful, but they are not required for this role. We are mainly looking for someone with mechanical aptitude, some hands-on experience, and a willingness to learn while working directly with our Marine Mechanic. Relevant experience from automotive, diesel, small engine repair, HVAC, plumbing, electrical work, trade school, apprenticeships, or military mechanical work can all translate well.

Benefits

Part-Time employees are eligible for accrued Sick Leave.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist the Marine Mechanic with diagnostics, maintenance, and repair tasks for inboard and outboard engines
  • Support maintenance of vessel systems, including electrical, plumbing, bilge, and fuel components
  • Perform routine upkeep such as oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks, and minor hardware repairs
  • Help clean and organize tools, maintenance areas, and equipment storage
  • Assist with sanding, fiberglass patching, and painting under supervision
  • Load and transport parts, tools, and materials to and from vessels, docks, and job sites
  • Record maintenance activities and parts used in logs or maintenance software as directed
  • Follow all safety procedures and use required PPE
  • Help prepare vessels for inspections by cleaning bilges, checking safety gear, and securing components
  • Work cooperatively with captains, deck crew, and operations staff to support vessel readiness

Requirements

The Marine Technician must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Have at least 1 year of hands-on experience in mechanical, electrical, or marine maintenance through work, trade school, apprenticeship, military service, or a similar setting
  • Have a basic understanding of hand tools, power tools, and mechanical systems
  • Be willing to learn and take direction in a team environment
  • Have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license
  • Be able to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Be able to climb ladders, work in confined spaces, and move safely on docks and vessels
  • Be available for flexible shifts, including weekends and some holidays
  • Be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred, but not required:

  • Enrollment in or completion of a marine tech or vocational program
  • Familiarity with small engine repair or vessel maintenance
  • Exposure to basic marine systems such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or propulsion
  • CPR/First Aid certification or OSHA 10 Maritime
  • Interest in building a long-term career in the marine trades

Work Environment

This is a physical, hands-on role in an active marine environment. Work may involve docks, vessels, floating platforms, changing weather, engine noise, fuel odors, moving surfaces, lifting, climbing, and occasional high-demand weekends or holidays.
