Building Engineer information

What are some typical challenges building engineers face in managing multiple facility systems simultaneously?

Building Engineers often oversee several complex systems such as HVAC, electrical, and plumbing within a facility. A common challenge is prioritizing urgent repairs while maintaining routine preventative maintenance schedules. Effective time management and communication with other departments are essential to minimize downtime and ensure building occupants’ comfort and safety. Collaboration with vendors and contractors also plays a key role when resolving specialized system issues.

What is the difference between Building Engineer vs Facility Technician?

Building Engineers and Facility Technicians often share certifications and work in similar environments, focusing on maintaining building systems. Building Engineers typically have broader responsibilities, including overseeing multiple systems and performing complex repairs, while Facility Technicians focus on specific equipment maintenance and troubleshooting. Both roles are essential for building operations and are frequently searched together by employers and job seekers.

What is a building engineer?

A Building Engineer is a professional responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of a building's systems, such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), electrical, plumbing, and structural components. They ensure that all systems function efficiently and safely, often performing regular inspections and troubleshooting issues as they arise. Building Engineers may work in residential, commercial, or industrial properties and coordinate with other contractors or technicians to address complex problems. Their role is essential for maintaining the comfort, safety, and value of a property.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a building engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Building Engineer, you need a solid understanding of building systems, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing, typically supported by a relevant technical degree or certification. Familiarity with building automation systems (BAS), maintenance management software, and industry certifications such as EPA or LEED are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and time-management skills help you efficiently address tenant needs and coordinate with contractors or facility managers. These competencies ensure building safety, operational efficiency, and occupant satisfaction in complex property environments.

Job description

Are you a seasoned engineer with a passion for solving complex building challenges and the people skills to build long-lasting client relationships?

We’re looking for a Senior Civil Engineer with about 15 years of experience to join our Building Restoration Group. This is a key leadership opportunity to serve existing and future clients across the North Central Ontario market while supporting a variety of building restoration projects from concept to completion.

This role can be based out of any Burnside office in Ontario, offering flexibility while being part of a tight-knit, high-performing team.

What You'll Do:

  • Manage building restoration projects including concrete restoration, cladding renewal, roof replacement, building condition assessments, and capital planning.
  • Lead client engagement—building trust, delivering solutions, and growing relationships.
  • Prepare proposals, tender and contract documents, and manage project finances and invoicing.
  • Oversee construction-phase services, including contract administration and site inspections.
  • Review and sign off on inspection reports and technical documentation.
  • Mentor and support junior staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performance team culture.
  • Coordinate with contractors, sub-consultants, and approval agencies.
  • Track and manage project budgets, schedules, and QA/QC processes.
  • Maintain strong, responsive communication with stakeholders at every stage of the project.

What You Bring:

  • 15 years of building science or building restoration experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or applied science (or related discipline).
  • Eng. designation in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • Possessing a BSS designation will be an asset
  • Experience managing multi-disciplinary projects and client accounts.
  • Strong communication skills—for both technical discussions and client relationships.
  • Proven organizational and time-management skills in a consulting environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel); adaptable to new systems and platforms.

This is a fantastic opportunity to take a leadership role on a growing team, deliver meaningful projects, and strengthen client partnerships across a diverse portfolio of restoration work.

Ready to bring your experience to a company that values collaboration, integrity, and technical excellence?

    Salary Range: $135,000 - $150,000

The final compensation offered will be based on factors such as relevant experience, skills, internal equity, and market conditions.

Position Type: New Position

Why Choose Burnside?
