Job Description:
The Controls Engineer II follows instructions related to the design, tracking, and installation of systems and/or service installed jobs. This may include training of customers and employees, ordering of materials, entering of database, and programming, creating, and installing new software, and performing troubleshooting function of assigned jobs. This position coordinates with the Controls Team Lead and Engineering Manager on all assigned projects and acts as the main technical liaison to the customer.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
30% Commissions and generates graphics for both large and small-scale job sites
  • Performs point-to-point checkout autonomously or with system specialist support.
  • Verify program operates per given sequence of operation.
  • Sets up trend information for all systems.
  • Schedules system equipment per time-of-day schedule and owner's presence.
  • Modifies architectural drawings using AutoCAD to import into graphical interface.
  • Constructs system graphics with pertinent point information blocks and navigational links.
  • Assists with startup, certification, and project turnover.
  • Ensures work quality on projects.
  • Collects signed documentation (by the owner) of work completed

30% Performs job-related programming for computer-based systems
  • Creates programs for jobs ranging from simple AHUs to large complex boiler/chiller plants.
  • Implements existing program strategies that control VAV or CV AHU/RTUs
  • Introduces simple stage control strategies for small boiler/chiller plants.

20% Updates pertinent job-related information
  • Develops project information (e.g., system and cabinet layouts, database, submittal cut sheets, etc.) using given software to meet sales intent of the project.
  • Generates RFIs (Request for Information) during project.
  • Incorporates information from project blueprints, and specifications into submittal booklets.
  • Prepares system overview of network layout.
  • Prepares "as-built" record drawings and documents from data supplied by installation or operations personnel including graphical screenshots and printed programs.
  • Stays current with new software and changes to existing software.
    • Studies product manuals/brochures, etc.
    • Navigates thru vendor websites to gather documentation (i.e. Infolink, FPG, etc.)

10% Assists with sales estimating on potential or current projects
  • Determines the time it will take to complete a task and is accountable to finishing projects on-time and under budget.
  • Determines when change orders are necessary and for additional work.

10% Provides customer service and technical assistance to build and maintain customer relationships
  • Develops relationships with customer end users and decisions makers.
  • Presents a professional image of Building Controls and Services when communicating with customers.
  • Acts as a technical resource to customers and other BCS staff.

Experience and Requirements:
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or architectural engineering.

Skills and Experience:
  • Minimum four years of experience in engineering systems and/or systems service.
  • Strong knowledge of automation systems, HVAC and electrical concepts and operations.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as blueprints, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Proficient in using the engineering workstation, including full capacity of the AutoCAD drafting standards.
  • Proficient in setting up Ethernet networks.
  • Proficient in using current Windows Operating System for workstation and server applications.
  • Superb oral and written communication skills.
  • Mathematical abilities to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and create and interpret graphs.
  • Strong problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to carry out instructions provided in written, oral or diagram form.
  • Ability to evaluate urgency of situation and prioritize tasks.
  • Organized with an attention to detail.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
  • Valid driver license

Other Requirements:
  • May require overtime, evening, or weekend work.
  • Requires travel to and from job sites for start-up and commissioning.
  • Requires occasional overnight stays.
  • On-call as needed to assist with online/onsite service calls

Training and development:
  • 40 hours continuing education annually.

Physical Requirements:
  • Requires sitting and walking on a frequent basis; standing, bending, climbing, balancing, twisting, and reaching with hands and arms on an occasional basis.
  • Requires the ability to carry, lift, move or push up to 25 pounds on a regular basis and may be required to carry, lift, move or push 100 pounds or more occasionally.
  • Must be able to talk and listen to others and uses hands or fingers to handle of feel on a regular basis. Frequent use of manual dexterity and visualization of a computer screen throughout the day. Requires ability to see up close and distant, distinguish colors, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:
  • This position regularly works in an office setting and on job sites in all types of indoor and outdoor conditions including near moving mechanical parts, in high, precarious places, extreme heat, cold and humidity. Occasional exposure to toxic or caustic fumes or chemicals. Regular noise levels range from moderate to very loud when visiting job sites.
  • Most of the job duties require the employee to be working on HVAC equipment in close quarters. Most testing is done with the equipment operating, creating noise and air movement. Many of our customer facilities have unfavorable environmental conditions. Many job duties require the employee to work with computers and electronic media on a regular basis.
