General Summary
This is a full-time, 12-month faculty position. Responsibilities include instruction, course and curriculum development, professional development, service to students, and service to the college and community. The faculty member will facilitate classroom instruction; evaluate and monitor student progress; assign grades; provide academic support; maintain attendance and grade records; advise students on academic and career goals; support student retention efforts; and maintain required classroom and office hours.
As a Building Construction Technology Instructor, the faculty member will provide competency-based instruction that prepares students for employment in residential and commercial construction occupations. Instruction includes classroom, laboratory, and hands-on training that emphasizes safety, technical knowledge, craftsmanship, professionalism, and workforce readiness.
Essential Functions
As a Building Construction Technology Instructor in the TCAT at Chattanooga State, your primary responsibility will be teaching this vital program area. You will facilitate instruction, evaluate students, monitor progress, assign grades, maintain records, counsel students, and support retention.
Develop and maintain a Learning Management System site and maintain curriculum and advisory committee activities.
Instructional areas include Construction Safety, OSHA Standards, Blueprint Reading, Construction Mathematics, Hand and Power Tools, Site Layout, Concrete Construction, Residential and Commercial Framing, Roofing, Exterior and Interior Finishes, Doors and Windows, Drywall, Cabinet Installation, Basic Plumbing, Electrical and HVAC Concepts, Building Codes, Construction Regulations, Construction Equipment Safety, Employability Skills, and NCCER competencies.
Maintain a safe training environment and inventory of tools, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Professional Growth
Remain current within assigned instruction, construction technologies, industry standards, instructional methodologies, and professional practices. Attend professional development and participate in annual faculty evaluation.
Service to Students
Maintain an up-to-date curriculum, maintain technical skills, acquire new industry skills, and assist graduates with employment opportunities.
Holistic Student Support
Support students through Admissions and Records, Enrollment Services, Student Services, Recruiting, Orientation, Career Services, Student Support Center, Student Conduct, Student Life, Multicultural and International Services, Adult Student Services, and Disability Services. Promote accessibility and student success.
Organizational Culture
Provide student- and community-focused support aligned with College values. Support a welcoming and respectful environment and provide responsive services to students, faculty, and staff.
Teaching Excellence and Program Innovation
Demonstrate teaching excellence through evidence-based instructional practices. Refine instructional approaches and structure student experiences that support accessibility, relevance, belongingness, and workforce preparedness.
Position Requirements
High School Diploma or GED required. Minimum five years of residential and/or commercial construction experience. Demonstrated competency in construction methods, carpentry, framing, finish work, blueprint reading, construction mathematics, and safety practices. Evidence of ability to teach students. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Commitment to remain current in the construction industry. Basic computer skills. Valid driver license.
Preferred Requirements
Associate or Bachelor degree; NCCER Instructor Certification; OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification; prior teaching, apprenticeship, or workforce training experience; relevant industry certifications and licenses.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Computer skills with Microsoft products. Comprehensive knowledge of residential and commercial construction practices. Commitment to academic excellence. Positive and cooperative disposition. Strong communication skills. Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, employers, contractors, and advisory committee members.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb ladders, work in classroom and construction environments, lift up to 50 pounds, operate construction tools and equipment, and work indoors and outdoors.
Salary Range: $56,263 - $67,517
Commensurate with experience and according to Tennessee Board of Regents guidelines.
