We are responsible for the State Building Code, the State Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators and the State Safety Code for Boilers and Hot Water Heaters. Through the inspection of elevators, escalators, ski-lifts and other lifting devices you will be making a difference every day. There are approximately 16,000 existing devices and 400 new devices each year that our team is responsible for inspecting and issuing citations where the device is out of compliance.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nDuties Include:\r\n\r\n\r\n Inspecting construction, installation, alteration and operation of existing elevators, escalators, and ski lifts.\r\n Witnessing full load safety and hydraulic pressure tests on elevators.\r\n Investigating accidents and complaints involving lifting devices.\r\n Inspecting and recommending shutdown of lifting devices due to code safety violations and unsafe conditions.\r\n Reviewing new construction scope of work plans.\r\n Conducting new acceptance inspections on newly installed elevators.\r\n Testifying at hearings and in court.\r\n Gathering information and writing reports.\r\n Reviewing blueprints.\r\n Responding to questions from architects, engineers, consultants, building owners, managers, elevator contractors and the public regarding various building and engineering codes.\r\n Participating in building job code meetings with contractors.\r\n Collecting overdue fees for elevator operating certificates.\r\n Assisting in training of new Elevator Inspectors.\r\n Inspecting amusement parks and carnival rides.\r\n Assisting in the development of seminars on code standards.\r\n Performing related duties as required.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nWatch the video below to see what it's like to be an Elevator Inspector for the State of Connecticut !\r\n\r\n\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Office of the State Building Inspector this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the inspection of lifting devices for compliance with state laws, codes and regulations.\r\n

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

\r\n Knowledge of\r\n \r\n standard methods and materials used in construction and operation of lifting devices;\r\n signal systems, installation drawings and wiring diagrams;\r\n relevant state laws, regulations and various engineering and building codes;\r\n inspection and investigation methods and techniques;\r\n electrical welding and building disciplines;\r\n and ability to operate microprocessor control equipment and all other relevant technical devices affecting and controlling operation of lifting devices;\r\n \r\n \r\n Skills\r\n \r\n interpersonal skills;\r\n oral and written communication skills;\r\n \r\n \r\n Ability to\r\n \r\n read technical drawings, designs and specifications;\r\n utilize computer software.\r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Incumbents in this class must possess at the time of employment and maintain during employment a license as an Unlimited Elevator Journeyperson from the State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection.\r\n

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

\r\n\r\n Experience with electrical, fire alarm and building codes.\r\n Experience with Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook.\r\n Experience inspecting, adjusting and maintaining installed freight and passenger elevators and escalators.\r\n Experience using smart phone and other mobile devices for reporting.\r\n Experience providing oral and written instructions.\r\n\r\n\r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

\r\n\r\n Incumbents in this class will be required to travel.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.\r\n\r\n\r\n

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class will be required to climb in and onto elevator cars and may risk danger of injury from working with electrical wiring and may be exposed to moderately disagreeable conditions.
