Build And Release Manager information

What is a build and release manager?

Build and Release Managers are IT professionals responsible for overseeing the process of building, packaging, and deploying software applications. They coordinate software releases, manage version control, and ensure that all changes are tested and integrated smoothly into production environments. Their role often involves working closely with development, testing, and operations teams to streamline the delivery pipeline, resolve build issues, and maintain release schedules. Effective Build and Release Managers help ensure software is delivered reliably, on time, and with minimal disruption.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a build and release manager?

To thrive as a Build and Release Manager, you need expertise in software development lifecycle processes, version control, and build automation, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools such as Jenkins, Git, Maven, Docker, and experience with CI/CD pipelines are typically required. Strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills help you coordinate across development, QA, and operations teams. These skills are crucial for ensuring reliable, efficient, and timely software releases in complex technical environments.

What are some common challenges faced by build and release managers, and how can they be addressed?

Build and Release Managers often encounter challenges such as coordinating across multiple development teams, managing complex build pipelines, and ensuring timely delivery of software releases. Addressing these challenges typically involves implementing robust automation tools, maintaining clear documentation, and establishing effective communication channels between development, QA, and operations teams. Proactively identifying bottlenecks and fostering a collaborative work environment can significantly improve the release process and reduce the risk of last-minute issues.

What is the difference between Build And Release Manager vs Software Developer?

Job description

Job Description

Work Classification:

Hybrid: The successful candidate is expected to report to Milford, MI three times per week, at minimum, or as dictated by the business.

The Team:

The Mechatronics Infrastructure Software Team enables GM's Software Defined Vehicle platforms by driving the delivery, integration, and release of foundational software across programs and builds. We work across software, calibration, integration, validation, and program teams to make sure the right content gets where it needs to go on time and with quality.

This is a fast-moving environment where execution matters. The team works across multiple build events, milestones, and stakeholders, and success depends on tight coordination, strong follow-through, and clear ownership.

The Role:

We are looking for a Software DRE to own software delivery coordination across SDV Mechatronics Infrastructure programs. This role will work closely with SWILs, the calibration team, software teams, and key stakeholders to ensure software content is tracked, aligned, released, and delivered on time with quality.

You will be responsible for coordinating software delivery, tracking timing and milestones, pulling part numbers, managing readiness across builds, and ensuring all required content reaches the right destination at the right time. This role serves as the single point of contact for software delivery issues, status, and escalation paths across the program.

What You'll Do:

  • Own software delivery coordination across SDV Mechatronics Infrastructure builds and program milestones

  • Work closely with SWILs, calibration teams, software teams, and stakeholders to align delivery plans, dependencies, and readiness

  • Track software timing, milestones, part numbers, release content, and key program deliverables across builds

  • Ensure all required software artifacts, approvals, and delivery items get where they need to go on time and with quality

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for software delivery issues, status, risks, and escalations

  • Coordinate across teams to identify gaps, resolve blockers, and maintain alignment on build progress and release readiness

  • Support issue tracking, status reporting, and milestone reviews with clear, accurate communication to stakeholders and leadership

  • Maintain delivery plans, schedules, and documentation to support execution, traceability, and follow-through

  • Partner with SWILs and other technical leads to troubleshoot delivery and integration issues as needed

  • Drive strong execution discipline across multiple parallel builds in a fast-paced environment

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field

  • 5+ years of experience in software integration, build management, release coordination, DRE, or project execution roles

  • Strong project management and execution skills, including schedule tracking, milestone management, risk identification, and issue follow-up

  • Experience working across cross-functional teams in software delivery, integration, or automotive development environments

  • Familiarity with software build processes, release workflows, integration frameworks, and version control systems such as Git or SVN

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to track multiple moving pieces across programs, builds, and delivery events

  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to provide clear status, drive closure, and escalate effectively

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong ownership mindset and follow-through to ensure commitments are completed with quality and on time

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Master's degree in engineering, computer science, or a related technical field

  • 8+ years of experience in software integration, build management, release execution, or program delivery coordination

  • Experience working with SWILs, calibration teams, software release processes, or infrastructure software organizations

  • Familiarity with automotive software delivery, part number management, program timing, and milestone tracking

  • Experience supporting software builds across multiple programs or large, distributed engineering organizations

  • Proficiency in Python, C++, or Java

  • Experience driving issue resolution and maintaining execution discipline across complex technical programs

  • Strong leadership presence and ability to coordinate across teams without losing detail or urgency

Who Thrives Here:

  • People who love execution and know how to keep complex software deliveries moving

  • Engineers who are highly organized, detail oriented, and strong at tracking issues to closure

  • People who can manage timing, content, milestones, and risks without losing sight of quality

  • Teammates who communicate clearly, push for alignment, and keep stakeholders informed

  • Individuals who take ownership, stay on top of details, and act as a dependable single point of contact in a fast-moving environment

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location at least 3 times a week {or other frequency dictated by their manager}. This job may be eligible for relocation benefits.
