The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is advertising for the next Director of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).

The BTS Director has two roles:

  • USDOT Statistical Official (SO):Pursuant to the Evidence Act under 5 USC § 314(a), the incumbent serves asUSDOT Statistical Official, responsible for directing and coordinating statistical policy for the Department,overseeing the development of the Department data quality standards and confidentiality standards to safeguardsensitive information, and advising the Department on the validity of statistical techniques and conclusions.
  • Director of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics:49 USC §6302 legislates the authorities and responsibilities ofBTS Director. BTS Director serves as the Secretary’s senior advisor on data and statistics and is responsible fordirecting BTS programs to enhance data collection, analysis, and reporting. In addition, the Director ensures themost cost-effective use of transportation monitoring and is responsible for coordinating the collection ofinformation with the Operating Administrations of the Department and with other Federal agencies. The Directoralso collects, compiles, analyzes and publishes a comprehensive set of transportation statistics on performance andimpacts of the national transportation system.
