Job description

Overhead Door Company of Greater Syracuse is looking for a motivated and customer-focused Residential Garage Door Estimator.

This is a great opportunity for someone with real garage door industry experience who enjoys working with customers, understands residential garage doors and openers, and is interested in applying that knowledge in an estimating and consultation role.

We are especially interested in hearing from garage door installers, service technicians, or other garage door professionals who have approximately 3 to 5 years of experience and are ready for a different type of role within the industry.

This is not a high-pressure sales position. We are looking for someone who can listen to customers, evaluate the jobsite, explain options clearly, and recommend the right solution.

What You’ll Do

As a Residential Garage Door Estimator, you will meet with homeowners, property owners, small business customers, and property managers to review their garage door and opener needs. This role focuses primarily on residential garage doors and openers, while also supporting light commercial customers such as small businesses, property managers, and local facilities.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting in-home and on-site consultations scheduled by our office team
  • Evaluating residential and light commercial garage door and opener needs
  • Measuring openings and reviewing jobsite conditions
  • Preparing and presenting estimates for repairs, replacements, and new installations
  • Explaining product options, including door styles, colors, insulation, window options, openers, garage door screens, and accessories
  • Helping customers make informed decisions based on their needs, budget, and existing conditions
  • Following up on proposals and actively pursuing open estimating opportunities
  • Coordinating with our internal team on scheduling, ordering, and job execution
  • Verifying measurements, materials, product selections, and scope requirements
  • Preparing and placing product orders accurately according to company procedures, including complete garage doors, garage door screens, replacement sections, garage door openers, and related materials
  • Maintaining strong communication with customers and coworkers throughout the process

What We’re Looking For

The right candidate will have verifiable garage door experience and the ability to communicate professionally with customers.

Required qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of verifiable garage door industry experience required, or equivalent experience demonstrating the ability to independently measure, specify, and order similar building products
  • Ability to independently measure openings and identify jobsite conditions that affect installation
  • Knowledge of residential garage doors, openers, product selection, measurements, and installation conditions
  • Strong verbal communication and customer service skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Self-motivated and able to manage time independently
  • Valid and clean New York State driver’s license
  • Comfortable using mobile devices, photos, estimating software, CRM systems, manufacturer portals, supplier portals, and other company technology
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and other common business software

Strong computer and email communication skills are required. The successful candidate must be able to write professional emails, use proper grammar and spelling, format messages clearly, attach photos or documents when needed, and communicate promptly and professionally with customers, coworkers, and vendors.

Work Environment

This is not a work-from-home or remote position.

The Residential Garage Door Estimator is expected to begin the workday from the office unless otherwise directed and work from the office when not meeting with customers or visiting job sites.

The position requires regular local travel to customer homes, businesses, and job sites to conduct estimates, evaluate conditions, and gather the information needed to prepare accurate proposals.

Standard schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM

A company vehicle is provided for work-related travel.

Compensation

Expected base salary range: $44,200 to $54,000 per year, depending on experience, qualifications, garage door knowledge, customer-facing ability, and overall fit for the role.

This position is also eligible for commission based on performance. A successful estimator can earn additional compensation above the base salary, with total earnings varying based on individual performance and sales results.

Benefits

  • Company vehicle
  • Company cell phone or allowance
  • Health insurance, including a no-cost bronze single plan with a $1 enrollment fee
  • 401(k) with company matching
  • Life insurance
  • Short-term disability
  • Vacation time, including three vacation days available after 6 months of service
  • Sick time / PTO
  • Holiday pay
