Broadcast Graphics Designer information

What is a broadcast graphics designer?

Broadcast Graphics Designers are professionals who create visual content for television and digital broadcasts. Their work includes designing on-screen graphics, lower thirds, motion graphics, title sequences, and animated elements that enhance the visual storytelling of news, sports, entertainment, and live events. They typically use specialized software like Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, and Cinema 4D to produce high-quality graphics that align with a broadcaster's brand and message. These designers collaborate closely with producers, directors, and technical teams to ensure graphics are timely, accurate, and visually appealing. Their role is essential in making broadcasts engaging and easy to understand for viewers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a broadcast graphics designer?

To thrive as a Broadcast Graphics Designer, you need a solid background in graphic design, motion graphics, and a good understanding of broadcast standards, often backed by a relevant degree or diploma. Proficiency in industry-standard software such as Adobe Creative Suite (After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator), Cinema 4D, and familiarity with real-time graphics systems like Vizrt or Chyron is crucial. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong collaboration skills help you deliver engaging visuals that meet both technical and editorial requirements. These competencies are essential to produce high-quality, on-brand graphics that enhance viewer experience and meet tight broadcast deadlines.

What are some common challenges faced by broadcast graphics designers during live productions?

Broadcast graphics designers often work in fast-paced, high-pressure environments where quick turnarounds and last-minute changes are the norm. During live productions, they must ensure that graphics are not only visually engaging but also accurate and delivered on time, sometimes with only seconds to spare. Collaboration with producers, directors, and technical teams is essential to adapt to evolving scripts and real-time events. Maintaining composure and flexibility is key to successfully managing these challenges and ensuring a smooth broadcast.

  • Create YouTube thumbnails for both the Evo FGC and Evo Events channels.
  • Design presentations and decks for internal use, client presentations, and partner-facing materials.
  • Prepare, package, and distribute production-ready files for print vendors and other external partners.
  • Collaborate with creative, sales, comms and marketing teams to execute projects from concept through final delivery.
  • Maintain consistency with Evo's brand standards as well as the visual guidelines of relevant partners and clients.
  • Manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining a high level of quality and attention to detail.

Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of typography, layout, composition, hierarchy, and fundamental graphic design principles.
  • Competency in print production, including preparing files for professional printing and understanding production requirements.
  • Strong design portfolio demonstrating a clean, modern, and thoughtful design aesthetic.
  • Proven ability to package, organize, and distribute files accurately and efficiently.
  • Ability to follow, apply, and maintain brand standards and guidelines across Evo, partner, and client work.
  • Strong attention to detail and a high standard for craft and execution.
  • Ability to receive creative direction, incorporate feedback, and work effectively within a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, event-driven environment.

Bonus Points
  • Passion for fighting games, esports, gaming and gaming communities.
  • Experience creating motion graphics or animation.
  • Experience with 3D design, rendering, or visualization.
  • Experience with web design and digital product design.
  • Experience with photo editing, compositing, and retouching.
  • Previous experience designing for live events, entertainment, sports, or other high-energy audience-driven environments.
