Job description

Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Bridge Coatings Inspector to support the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Business Unit on bridge painting and maintenance consulting services across various infrastructure projects in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. In this role, you will perform visual and physical quality inspections of surface preparation and coating applications, review contractor submittals, and ensure strict compliance with project specifications, AMPP standards, and MTA/LIRR safety guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
  • Verify the completion of surface preparation, cleaning, and coating system installations on project sites according to AMPP requirements.
  • Review contractor monthly submittals, including certified payrolls, schedule updates, requisitions for payment, work plans, shop drawings, and diversity compliance updates (DBE/MBE/WBE).
  • Interface with Senior Field Inspectors to evaluate third-party contractor and consultant invoices relative to work progress.
  • Physically navigate demanding job sites, including inclined embankments, train tracks, ballast, and elevated work platforms, responding quickly to alternate site visits when urgent circumstances arise.
  • Document daily construction and inspection activities utilizing the Manual for Uniform Record Keeping Format and digital Project Management Information Systems (PMIS).
  • Ensure all work aligns with LIRR design and construction procedures, Safety and Quality Plans, and OSHA regulations.
  • Coordinate LIRR flag protection and assist with planning and scheduling track outages and foul time for construction operations.
  • Read and interpret contract specifications, construction plans, Containment Drawings, and Maintenance and Protection of Traffic (MPT) plans.
  • Promptly notify MTA personnel of any critical events, safety issues, or discrepancies requiring immediate attention.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in bridge painting, construction, and inspection. (Railroad operations experience is strongly preferred).
  • Certifications: Valid Association for Material Protection and Performance (AMPP) Coatings Inspector (CIP Level I) or Bridge Coatings Inspector (BCI Level I) certification, which must be maintained throughout the assignment.
  • Safety Training: Completed OSHA-30 training class within the past 5 years. Must also complete and maintain MTA Roadway Worker Protection certification (provided on-site).
  • Technical Expertise: Proven 3-year track record in verifying construction completion, inspecting surface cleaning and coating installations to AMPP standards, and interpreting blueprints, containment plans, and MPT drawings.
  • Administrative & Digital Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills; proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite (Teams, Word, Excel) and electronic filing/project management systems.
  • Licensing: Valid driver's license.
