Incumbents of positions in this series apply paints and other finishes to bridges; prepare paints for application; prepare surfaces for paint application; erect necessary rigging, scaffold, signs, etc.; and perform related work as required.
The basic purpose of this work is to maintain the appearance and protect the surfaces of bridges and related structures by applying paints and other finishes.
Applies paints, varnishes and waterproofing materials to bridge surfaces and structures on, or related to, bridges to protect and maintain appearance of bridges.
Prepares paint or other finishes for use by mixing and matching colors to the desired shade and thinning to appropriate consistency.
Prepares surfaces to be painted including wood, metal and concrete by using hand or power tools including sandblasters, scrapers, paint chippers, etc., and protects other surfaces from paint and debris by laying out drop cloths.
Erects and uses riggings, scaffolding, platform staging and ladders following accepted safety practices in order to gain access to areas needing painting or waterproofing.
Erects temporary structures such as signs or barriers to control vehicular or pedestrian traffic for safety purposes.
Performs some bridge maintenance work including mixing and pouring concrete and carpentry work using appropriate tools and methods.
Performs related duties such as waterproofing gutters; removing snow; cleaning and maintaining tools and equipment; maintaining drains, bridge seats and caps; and lubricating expansion points.
