How much do bridge inspector jobs pay per year?
What is the difference between Bridge Inspector vs Structural Engineer?
| Aspect | Bridge Inspector | Structural Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Certifications | Typically requires state-specific inspector certifications and safety training | Requires a Professional Engineer (PE) license and engineering degree |
| Work Environment | On-site inspections of bridges, often outdoors and in various weather conditions | Design, analysis, and planning in offices or on-site for larger projects |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Public agencies, transportation departments, construction firms | Engineering consulting firms, construction companies, government agencies |
Bridge Inspectors focus on evaluating the safety and condition of existing bridges through on-site inspections, while Structural Engineers design and analyze new or existing structures, including bridges. Both roles require technical knowledge, but their responsibilities and certifications differ significantly.

As a bridge inspector, your duties include monitoring construction sites, performing surveys and inspections, issuing violation notices or stop-work orders, creating written documentation, and reviewing plans to ensure compliance with ordinances, regulations, and building codes. Your responsibilities include ensuring a bridge (or another building) is safe from the design phase through to testing after construction. Being a bridge inspector requires you have some formal qualifications and education, typically at least a bachelor’s degree with a focus on building inspection and ideally further certification in building or bridge inspection. Job description
Position Description Precinct 4 is seeking an experienced, highly skilled Infrastructure Inspector to join our Road & Bridge team. This senior-level role focuses on performing detailed inspections of horizontal civil construction projects (roadways, bridges, drainage, and related infrastructure), with occasional support for vertical construction elements. The inspector will work hand-in-hand with the Road & Bridge team to ensure high-quality construction that meets or exceeds project specifications, contract documents, Harris County standards & requirements, TxDOT standards, and applicable codes.
Key responsibilities include verifying compliance during construction, documenting work thoroughly, identifying and resolving issues, and supporting final road acceptance processes. This position demands seasoned expertise in public-sector infrastructure inspection, strong independent judgment, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to safety, accuracy, and public service. Ideal candidates will have significant prior experience with county or TxDOT-level projects.
Duties and Responsibilities: Conduct thorough on-site inspections of civil construction projects, including roadways, bridges, drainage systems, traffic control, and related infrastructure, to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, special provisions, contract documents, and applicable standards. Review construction plans, drawings, specifications, and schedules for municipal and precinct roadway/drainage projects; interpret technical documents and identify potential issues early. Perform detailed measurements, material verifications, workmanship assessments, and visual/functional checks to confirm that installation methods, materials, and construction practices meet required quality and performance standards.
Monitor contractor operations, including traffic control, phasing, barricades, and safety measures; ensure compliance with approved plans and standards. Identify deficiencies, nonconforming work, or potential problems; document findings and recommend corrective actions to contractors, engineers, and project staff. Review detailed construction reports, inspection logs, field notes, checklists, progress updates, quantities, equipment/material/labor records, photographs, and other documentation using the e-Builder software platform (Harris County's standard system for all project records, reports, and supporting documentation).
Verify that all materials delivered and installed are approved, tested, and conform to project specifications and Material Producer Lists or equivalent requirements. Calculate or verify quantities for payment purposes; assist with monthly and final estimates as needed. Coordinate with contractors, engineers, technical staff, residents, and the public to address questions, resolve construction-related issues, and facilitate smooth project execution.
Document and respond to citizen complaints regarding construction activities, coordinating resolutions with Road & Bridge team members. Participate in pre-construction meetings, progress meetings, and final inspections/road acceptance processes. Maintain accurate project records to support successful project closeout and acceptance.
Perform other duties as assigned to support Precinct 4's infrastructure goals. Harris County is an Equal Opportunity Employer https://hrrm.harriscountytx.gov/Pages/EqualEmploymentOpportunityPlan.aspx If you need special services or accommodations, please call (713) 274-5445 or email ADACoordinator@bmd.hctx.net. Only relevant convictions will be considered and, even when considered, may not automatically disqualify the candidate. Requirements Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Associate's or Bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, a related field preferred.
Equivalent combination of education and extensive experience will be considered. Licensure: Valid Texas driver's license. NOTE: Qualifying education, experience, knowledge and skills must be documented in your job application.
You may attach a resume to the application as supporting documentation but ONLY information stated on the application will be used for consideration. "See Resume" will not be accepted for qualifications. Preferences Minimum 8-10 years of significant, progressively responsible experience in infrastructure/civil construction inspection, with a strong emphasis on county, municipal, or TxDOT roadway, bridge, and drainage projects.
Relevant certifications (e.g., TxDOT inspection certifications, NICET, or equivalent) are highly desirable and may be required upon hire or within a specified timeframe. Demonstrated expertise in inspecting horizontal construction (roadways, bridges, drainage) and familiarity with vertical elements. Thorough knowledge of Harris County & TxDOT specifications, standard details, testing procedures, traffic control, and construction best practices
Proven ability to prepare high-quality technical reports, inspection logs, field documentation, and digital records. Proficiency with construction management software (e-Builder experience strongly preferred) and standard office applications. Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills for working effectively with contractors, engineers, and the public.
Commitment to safety and ability to work independently on active construction sites. General Information Work Environment: Work is on active construction sites involving pervasive hazards associated with heavy equipment and tool operations; speeding traffic; loud and constant noise; and regular exposure to chemicals, dust, fumes, and combustible materials. Required to work outdoors on varied and often unstable terrain involving exposure to varying weather conditions of extreme hot and cold temperatures.
Some working conditions require special precautions and the use of protective gear (e.g., hard hats, respirator masks, gloves, etc.) Physical Demands: Essential functions involve significant physical demands related to repeated lifting of up to 50 pounds unassisted, 100 pounds with assistance rarely; carrying tools, materials, and equipment over rough terrain; climbing, reaching and bending.
