Job description

The Opportunity
Ulteig is hiring a Senior Bridge Engineer to lead complex river-crossing and multi-span bridge projects as both design lead and project manager within our Bridge and Structures practice, which delivers the full bridge lifecycle from design and construction to inspection, maintenance, and load rating. Ulteig combines the agility of a growing practice with the support of a well-established organization. This role gives you meaningful influence over technical direction, standards, and the growth of a rapidly expanding practice.
Responsibilities span advanced analysis, technical reviews, client engagement, and select Engineer of Record duties, along with technical oversight and independent design review on priority programs. The role pairs hands-on design with client-facing delivery, supporting pursuit scoping, informing execution strategy, and mentoring staff to deliver technically sound and constructible designs. Primary tools may include RISA, STAAD.Pro, Midas Civil, CSiBridge, OpenBridge Designer, with AASHTOWare for Load Rating, delivering to AASHTO LRFD and LRFR standards.
You will guide engineering strategy for complex bridge work across the Upper Midwest, Mountain West, and Texas. This includes shaping project criteria, leading alternatives evaluations, determining analysis methodologies, directing advanced modeling, validating constructability and staging, coordinating across disciplines, and managing structural risk. You will also provide independent design reviews to ensure consistency, constructability, and alignment with client requirements.
You will work directly with DOT and tribal clients, using technical judgment to shape scope, alternatives, and delivery strategies. You will provide technical input on scope, methodology, and pricing; collaborate with pursuit and client service teams; articulate design strategy in client meetings; and strengthen long-term relationships to position Ulteig for complex structural work.
You will mentor engineers by providing technical guidance, reviewing work, and sharing expertise in analysis, criteria, and constructability to strengthen standards across the practice.
You will have space to innovate, establish technical direction, and influence how major bridge projects are delivered, backed by experienced proposal, marketing, and administrative teams. This role is central to advancing a rapidly expanding five-year-old practice entering its next stage of development.
What You'll Do
Technical Leadership and Delivery Excellence
  • Lead complex bridge engineering efforts from concept through completion, ensuring high technical quality and sound engineering judgment.
  • Solve advanced structural challenges involving steel and concrete systems, curved girders, seismic and ice loading, and other specialized conditions.
  • Conduct independent technical reviews, including oversight of third-party designs, to ensure accuracy, safety, constructability, and compliance.
  • Promote strong engineering practices and continuous improvement in design methods, tools, and quality management.
  • Anticipate emerging technical and market needs and bring forward ideas that strengthen Ulteig's long-term success.

Project Management and Execution
  • Serve as a project manager or technical lead on bridge and structural projects for state DOTs, counties, municipalities, and tribal entities.
  • Develop and manage scopes, budgets, and schedules with disciplined execution and clear communication.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated project outcomes.
  • Identify risks and implement mitigation strategies to support predictable, high-quality delivery.

Client Engagement and Market Development
  • Build and strengthen relationships with key clients, including state and local agencies, tribal nations, and industry partners.
  • Serve as a technical win leader on strategic pursuits by shaping win themes and project approach, contributing to proposals with Market and Sales teams, and representing design strategy in select interviews to strengthen Ulteig's presence in priority geographies.
  • Represent Ulteig with professionalism, technical credibility, and a strong commitment to client success.

Team Leadership and Mentorship
  • Actively develop the technical bench by coaching engineers on judgment, constructability, and client-facing technical communication.
  • Contribute to the long-term development of the Bridge and Structures team through knowledge sharing, training support, and active participation in team culture.
  • Model Ulteig's values and help foster a high-performing, supportive team culture.
  • Foster an inclusive team environment where diverse perspectives are valued, and team members feel a sense of belonging.

What We Expect from You
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering; a master's degree is preferred.
  • 12+ years of experience required.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Hybrid or remote within the U.S.; preferred location in the Upper Midwest, Mountain West, or Texas; willingness to travel approximately 10-20% to support clients, project sites, and internal teams.
  • Significant experience in bridge engineering, including design and review of steel and concrete structures for state DOTs, counties, municipalities, or tribal entities.
  • Experience with Risa, STAAD.Pro, Midas, CSiBridge, or similar advanced analysis platforms.
  • Proven ability to solve complex structural challenges involving curved girders, seismic and ice loading, and other advanced technical conditions.
  • Demonstrated experience leading bridge projects or major technical components with accountability for quality, schedule, and client communication.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts clearly to clients, partners, and team members.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and provide disciplined technical judgment in fast-moving project environments.
