What are BREEAM assessors?

BREEAM assessors are trained professionals who evaluate buildings against the BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) standards. They carry out assessments to determine how environmentally friendly and sustainable a building is, covering aspects such as energy efficiency, water usage, materials, and ecological impact. BREEAM assessors guide project teams through the certification process, carry out site visits, and compile detailed reports to help buildings achieve a BREEAM rating. Their work helps ensure that buildings meet high standards of sustainability and environmental responsibility.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BREEAM Assessor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a BREEAM Assessor, you need a solid understanding of sustainability principles, building design, and environmental assessment, typically supported by a relevant degree and BREEAM Assessor certification. Familiarity with BREEAM assessment tools, reporting software, and building information modeling (BIM) systems is essential. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for accurately evaluating buildings and interacting with clients. These competencies ensure accurate assessment, credible certification, and effective guidance for sustainable building practices.

What are typical daily responsibilities for a BREEAM Assessor, and how do they collaborate with project teams?

As a BREEAM Assessor, your daily tasks often involve reviewing building plans, conducting site visits, and liaising with architects, engineers, and contractors to ensure sustainability standards are met. You’ll frequently gather and verify evidence to support BREEAM credits, provide guidance on best practices for sustainable design, and prepare documentation for certification. Collaboration is key, as assessors regularly coordinate with project teams to address compliance challenges and help integrate BREEAM requirements into the construction process.
