Bread Merchandising information

What is bread merchandising?

Bread merchandising involves managing the display, stocking, and promotion of bread products in retail environments such as grocery stores and supermarkets. Merchandisers ensure shelves are well-stocked, products are arranged attractively, and expired or damaged goods are removed. They may also track inventory, rotate stock, and implement promotional strategies to increase sales. Effective bread merchandising helps maximize product visibility, maintain freshness, and boost overall sales.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a bread merchandiser, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bread Merchandiser, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a good understanding of inventory management, typically supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with handheld inventory scanners, planogram software, and basic point-of-sale systems is often required. Excellent communication, customer service, and time management abilities help you build relationships with store staff and ensure timely product displays. These skills are crucial for maintaining optimal product placement, minimizing waste, and driving bread sales in a competitive retail environment.

What are some typical challenges faced in bread merchandising and how can they be managed effectively?

Bread merchandising professionals often encounter challenges such as managing short product shelf life, ensuring optimal product rotation, and maintaining appealing displays despite frequent restocking needs. To address these, effective communication with store staff and regular checks on inventory are essential. Additionally, staying informed about sales trends and coordinating closely with the bakery or suppliers helps reduce waste and ensures shelves are stocked with fresh products, contributing to both customer satisfaction and sales growth.

Job description

About us

We are a James Beard–nominated bakery with a deep commitment to craft, community, and the kind of hospitality that makes people want to come back every morning. Our team is small and close-knit. We hold ourselves to a high standard — because we genuinely care about the food we make and the experience we offer. If you love good bread, love people, and thrive in a fast-moving environment, we'd love to meet you!

The role

As a front of house team member, you are often the first person our guests interact with. You set the tone for their entire visit. You'll work the counter, run the pastry and bread racks, pour coffee, take orders, handle payments, and keep the floor and display looking impeccable throughout the day. You'll also become knowledgeable about what we bake — the flours we use, the fermentation, the seasonal offerings — so you can speak to it with confidence and enthusiasm.

Day-to-day responsibilities

+ Greet and serve guests with warmth, attentiveness, and product knowledge

+ Maintain and merchandise the pastry, bread, and specialty goods displays

+ Prepare and serve beverages, pastries, bread, and brunch items accurately and efficiently

+ Process transactions accurately using our POS system; handle cash and card payments

+ Communicate pre-order and special requests between FOH and the kitchen team

+ Keep the counter, seating area, and retail floor clean, stocked, and visually sharp throughout the shift

+ Assist with closing duties: sanitizing surfaces, restocking supplies, and end-of-day reconciliation

+ Support wholesale pickups, catering orders, and in-store events as needed

What we're looking for

+ Genuine warmth and hospitality instincts

+ Curiosity and enthusiasm for artisan food and beverage

+ Ability to stay calm and efficient during busy rushes

+ Strong communication with teammates and guests

+ Reliability, punctuality, and pride in your work

+ Availability for early morning and weekend shifts

Nice to have

+ Prior experience in specialty coffee, food retail, or restaurant service

+ Familiarity with artisan bread, pastry, or fermentation

+ Experience with Toast POS system

+ ServSafe certified or food handler's card

+ Bilingual a plus

What we offer

+ Competitive hourly wage + tips

+ Generous staff discount

+ Paid time off and holidays

+ Opportunities for growth into lead and management roles

+ A warm, collaborative team culture

Each day, our lifework is to make the highest quality product, to maintain excellence, to serve our community with our hands and our hearts and to work as a team with love and empathy. Together we will create, learn, and travel through life. We were made for greatness.
At Born + Bread, we are on a mission to make great products with integrity and joy, but we are only as great as the people who work for it. We’re looking for the ones reaching for excellence with everything they do. We’re looking for the committed, the focused ones, the humble.
