What is a bread merchandiser?

A Bread Merchandiser is responsible for stocking, organizing, and maintaining fresh bread and bakery products in retail stores. They ensure that shelves are well-stocked, rotated for freshness, and attractively displayed to maximize sales. Bread Merchandisers often work early mornings, visit multiple store locations, and collaborate with store managers to maintain good relationships. This role requires physical activity, attention to detail, and good communication skills. It plays a crucial role in ensuring customers have access to fresh bakery items while supporting the brand's sales goals.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a bread merchandiser?

As a Bread Merchandiser, your main responsibilities include visiting grocery stores or retailers on an established route, checking bread stock levels, rotating products, removing stale items, and setting up attractive displays to maximize sales. You will also be responsible for inventory checks, placing orders for restocking, and ensuring all promotional materials are correctly displayed. Collaboration with store managers and staff is key to securing optimal shelf space and addressing any concerns regarding deliveries or product quality. Most Bread Merchandisers work independently and are on their feet for much of the day, making the role ideal for someone who enjoys being active and interacting with others.

To succeed as a Bread Merchandiser, you need knowledge of retail operations, inventory management, and display merchandising, usually gained through experience in grocery or food sales. Familiarity with planogram software, handheld inventory scanners, and basic point-of-sale systems is beneficial. Strong organization, time management, and communication skills help you efficiently service multiple store locations and build positive relationships with store staff. These abilities ensure products are well-stocked, displays are attractive, and sales targets are met, which are all vital for success in this role.

How do I become a bread merchandiser with no experience?

To become a bread merchandiser with no experience, start by applying for entry-level positions that often require minimal prior skills. Having good communication, basic math skills, and the ability to lift and stand for long periods are helpful; some employers may also provide on-the-job training. Gaining knowledge of retail or merchandising practices can improve your chances of securing the role.

Job description

About us

We are a James Beard–nominated bakery with a deep commitment to craft, community, and the kind of hospitality that makes people want to come back every morning. Our team is small and close-knit. We hold ourselves to a high standard — because we genuinely care about the food we make and the experience we offer. If you love good bread, love people, and thrive in a fast-moving environment, we'd love to meet you!

The role

As a front of house team member, you are often the first person our guests interact with. You set the tone for their entire visit. You'll work the counter, run the pastry and bread racks, pour coffee, take orders, handle payments, and keep the floor and display looking impeccable throughout the day. You'll also become knowledgeable about what we bake — the flours we use, the fermentation, the seasonal offerings — so you can speak to it with confidence and enthusiasm.

Day-to-day responsibilities

+ Greet and serve guests with warmth, attentiveness, and product knowledge

+ Maintain and merchandise the pastry, bread, and specialty goods displays

+ Prepare and serve beverages, pastries, bread, and brunch items accurately and efficiently

+ Process transactions accurately using our POS system; handle cash and card payments

+ Communicate pre-order and special requests between FOH and the kitchen team

+ Keep the counter, seating area, and retail floor clean, stocked, and visually sharp throughout the shift

+ Assist with closing duties: sanitizing surfaces, restocking supplies, and end-of-day reconciliation

+ Support wholesale pickups, catering orders, and in-store events as needed

What we're looking for

+ Genuine warmth and hospitality instincts

+ Curiosity and enthusiasm for artisan food and beverage

+ Ability to stay calm and efficient during busy rushes

+ Strong communication with teammates and guests

+ Reliability, punctuality, and pride in your work

+ Availability for early morning and weekend shifts

Nice to have

+ Prior experience in specialty coffee, food retail, or restaurant service

+ Familiarity with artisan bread, pastry, or fermentation

+ Experience with Toast POS system

+ ServSafe certified or food handler's card

+ Bilingual a plus

What we offer

+ Competitive hourly wage + tips

+ Generous staff discount

+ Paid time off and holidays

+ Opportunities for growth into lead and management roles

+ A warm, collaborative team culture

Each day, our lifework is to make the highest quality product, to maintain excellence, to serve our community with our hands and our hearts and to work as a team with love and empathy. Together we will create, learn, and travel through life. We were made for greatness.
At Born + Bread, we are on a mission to make great products with integrity and joy, but we are only as great as the people who work for it. We’re looking for the ones reaching for excellence with everything they do. We’re looking for the committed, the focused ones, the humble.
