Job description

We’re hiring a lead baker to join our production team, focused on creating and executing daily pastry and bakery items with love, precision, and efficiency.

Bread + Butter

Bread + Butter started in the basement of my home in Tasmania, Australia, where I churned butter by hand for customers at my local farmers market. From here, my butter made its way into the pastries at my first bakery, which opened in 2018. It escalated from there, and we now have three locations in Australia and employ fifty dedicated bakers, cooks, baristas and hospitality experts, all built from the simple desire to deliver delicious and exceptional coffee, pastries, and food to our community.

Our move to LA seems odd to most, but it makes perfect sense at the same time. It’s a bit of a long story. But here we are doing what we do best at our first location in Santa Monica.

Our guiding light remains the same in all we do: dedication to exceptional pastry, food and coffee, deep respect for tradition, honesty and integrity, and an unwavering commitment to our community.

We are searching for an experienced baker to join us full-time. This will be an exciting opportunity to join the OG US team and help further establish our little bakery as part of the fabric of Santa Monica.

Duties

This is a hands-on production role. We’re looking for someone who takes pride in doing things well, works clean and focused, and shows up consistently for their team. Duties include:

  • Ensuring consistent daily production of our menu.
  • Communicate any and all updates regarding pastry product preparation, loss of product, and EOD notes via SLACK.
  • Assist in developing new and seasonal items such as hot cross buns.
  • Be competent at the production of essential mixtures, recipes and products with little or no supervision.
  • Properly store, package, and handle all bakery products with regard to maintaining optimal quality.
  • Ordering, marking, dating, and rotating all bakery products according to existing standards.
  • Maintaining production and cleaning schedules.
  • Working with all FOH staff to help properly organize, condense and package bakery products prepared for sale.
  • Upholding Bread + Butter’s standards for quality, presentation, and hospitality at all times.

Skills Required to Succeed

  • 4 years bakery experience.
  • Experience with laminated doughs (croissant, puff pastry, etc).
  • Experience with both yeasted bread and sourdough/natural fermentation.
  • Have exceptional attention to detail.
  • Have a hospitality mindset.
  • Excellent time management skills to handle peak hours efficiently.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team while also being self-motivated.
  • Possess a current ServSafe Food Handlers card and/or acquire certificate.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the business, including early mornings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and stand for 4+ hours.
  • Ability to maneuver effectively around the cafe and bakery.

If this sounds like you and you are a good human who loves people and learning, please send in an application and let me know your favourite pastry.

Talk soon,
Olivia
