Job description

Laboratory Manager - Curing Brain Tumors
Division: Pediatrics
Work Arrangement: Onsite only
Location: Houston, TX
Salary Range: $57,320 - $67,435
FLSA Status: Exempt
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Summary
The Pediatric Brain Tumor Program is currently seeking an outstanding Laboratory Manager to lead and coordinate the activities of the research laboratory and assist Faculty in teaching and/or research programs. The ideal candidate will have experience in Life Science with high levels of energy, willing to learn and help, self-discipline, sense of responsibility, organization and dedication.
Job Duties
  • Executes the lab ordering processes, ensuring all necessary supplies and equipment are timely and available for the team.
  • Assists in onboarding new lab members and ensuring they are trained in lab procedures and safety protocols.
  • Supervises and supports lab technicians and trainees in their research activities as needed.
  • Understands and routinely participates in mouse work (transgenic mouse models and xenografts).
  • Prepares in-house made common use research reagents.
  • Consults with faculty to determine equipment purchase priorities, condition of existing equipment, and scheduled laboratory activities.
  • Prepares and puts in place equipment and demonstrates use and care of equipment to research personnel in the laboratory.
  • Maintains lab organization, including inventory management and space utilization.
  • Maintains and updates the database and physical storage of new tumor and cell samples collected for the lab biorepository.
  • Assists in implementing and maintaining lab safety and animal use protocols, and other regulatory documentation and compliance reports. - Diagnose equipment malfunctions.
  • Arranges service calls for equipment and orders supplies.
  • Collaborates with other labs and core facilities within the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics, Baylor College of Medicine and the TCH Cancer Center as needed.
  • Oversees lower-level lab member work, to include defining work responsibilities and prioritization in relation to their research projects.
  • Supports the Research Project principal investigators to ensure aspects of project delivery goal and objective are completed.
  • Trains and mentors existing and new staff.
  • Assigns tasks and delegates work to research lab members via informal direct oversight.
  • Performs other job-related duties such as shipping and receiving.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • Five years of relevant experience.

  • Previous experience with genetically engineered mouse models
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture techniques and animal work
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and laboratory management software
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Must be self-motivated, well-organized, highly independent, and willing to train new students and PDFs
  • Excellent communication, written and interpersonal skills are mandatory

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master of Life Science
  • Prior supervisory experience
