What is a boom?

Boom operators are audio technicians responsible for capturing sound during film, television, and video productions. They operate the boom microphone, positioning it close to the actors or sound sources while keeping it out of the camera frame. Boom operators work closely with the sound mixer and camera crew to ensure high-quality audio recording. Their role requires technical skill, coordination, and an understanding of the scene's requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a boom operator?

To thrive as a Boom Operator, you need a solid understanding of audio recording techniques, microphone placement, and general sound equipment, often supported by a background in audio production or film studies. Familiarity with professional audio gear such as boom poles, shotgun microphones, wireless systems, and digital audio recorders is essential. Excellent teamwork, communication, physical stamina, and attention to detail set standout boom operators apart. These skills ensure high-quality sound capture and seamless collaboration on set, which are critical for the success of film and television productions.

What are some common challenges faced by boom operators when working on film or television sets?

Boom Operators often face the challenge of capturing high-quality audio while staying out of the camera's frame and adapting to dynamic set environments. They must maintain precise microphone placement, even during complex scenes or when actors improvise their movements. Effective collaboration with the sound mixer, camera operators, and the director is essential to anticipate changes and achieve the best possible sound. Physical endurance and quick problem-solving are key, as shoots can be long and require extended periods of holding the boom pole in challenging positions.

Job description

About the job
Our mission
Boom is on a mission to level the playing field for the 110+ million renters in the US by making housing more flexible, affordable, and rewarding. Boom is building a suite of rental financial services for renters and property managers, including tenant screening, rent payment reporting, rent reporting-as-a-service, and a number of integrations with the largest property management systems (PMS). Boom serves renters through the Boom App and property managers via the Boom Platform. Now serving thousands of renters, Boom is led by second-time founder Rob Whiting (ex-BCG, Rubicon). It's backed by investors such as Starting Line, Clocktower Ventures, Gilgamesh Ventures (Petal co-founders), and angels such as William Hockey and Zach Perret (Co-founders of Plaid) and Harry Stebbings. Boom has been profiled by Inman, Business Insider, HousingWire, and more.
Opportunity
Boom Talent Network
Are you interested in Boom but haven't seen a posting that fits you? Tell us how you'd fit.
We open roles faster than we get them onto this careers page, and a few of our best hires got in touch before we had anything posted for them. If you're on the market, or just keeping an eye out, this is a good place to start.
Write your own job description. Tell us what you'd own, what you'd do with it, and why Boom. There's no open req attached to this posting, so if what you send us makes sense, we'll work out the role from there.
What to send us
The application is short. Use the "What interests you about working for Boom?" box as your pitch, and cover:
  • The role you'd own, including the title you'd give it and which team it sits on (Engineering, GTM, Operations, or Finance).
  • What you'd work on in your first 90 days, and the number you'd expect to move.
  • Your resume or LinkedIn, plus links to anything you've built or shipped.
  • Where you live today. Boom works in-office in Austin, so let us know if you're local or planning to relocate.
  • Anything your resume doesn't tell us. We do read this.

Where we usually hire
  • Engineering: full stack, AI, security, QA, engineering leadership, and product.
  • Go-To-Market: sales, customer success, customer support, and marketing.
  • Operations: revenue operations, leasing and property management operations, and program management.
  • Finance and accounting: accounting, FP&A, and finance operations.

If your work doesn't fall into one of those, send it anyway and make the case.
What we look for
  • People who want to build a function from scratch. Most of our roles are the first or second hire in their area.
  • Hands-on experience with AI tools, with specific examples of automations you've built or agents you've deployed.
  • Comfort working quickly with very few layers of management, and a habit of owning your own numbers.
  • High standards, without the politics that tend to come with bigger companies.
  • Real interest in the problem. There are more than 110 million renters in the US, and very little of the financial system is built for them.

How we work
  • We work in-office in Austin, Texas.
  • The team is small, the founders are accessible, and there isn't much standing between an idea and shipping it.
  • We automate before we add headcount, and we expect everyone here to work that way.

Benefits of working at Boom
  • Competitive salary with stock options
  • Full healthcare coverage (health, dental, vision) including 50% coverage for dependents
  • 15 days of Paid Time Off (PTO) per year + 3 sick days + all US federal holidays (11 in total) (note: we think unlimited PTO is BS and causes some employees to feel guilty when they take it)
  • Company-issued laptop/MacBook
  • Company-sponsored training & development
  • Regular off-sites, retreats, and other company-sponsored events and travel opportunities

What happens next
Our recruiting team reads every submission that comes through the Talent Network. If there's a fit with something we're working on, we'll reach out to set up an intro call. If the timing is off, we'll keep your details and come back to you when a role opens up that looks like the one you pitched.
We haven't listed compensation because the role doesn't exist yet. We'll work that out with you once we know what we're hiring for.
