Job description

Our client, a privately owned independent bookstore called Bristol Books, is seeking a manager to help the owner run the entire operation. The store is located in the waterfront district in Bristol, PA.  They serve the Bristol community through thoughtfully curated books, literary events, and exceptional customer service. The 900-square-foot store offers a welcoming space where readers of all ages can discover new books, connect with neighbors, and engage with the local literary community.


Position Summary

The Bookstore Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of daily bookstore operations, including sales, customer service, inventory management, staff supervision, merchandising, and community engagement. As the leader of a small independent bookstore, the Manager plays a hands-on role in creating a welcoming environment, driving sales, and ensuring the store remains a vibrant destination for readers. The store is open Tuesday - Saturday from 11 AM until 6 PM. The manager is expected to work 30 hours per week.


This position requires a self-motivated individual who can balance operational responsibilities with a genuine passion for books, literacy, and community building.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities are as follows:


Store Operations

·       Manage the day-to-day operations of the bookstore.

·       Open and close the store according to established procedures.

·       Ensure the sales floor is clean, organized, and inviting.

·       Monitor store performance and identify opportunities to increase sales and customer engagement.

·       Maintain compliance with store policies and procedures. Customer Experience

·       Deliver exceptional customer service and create a welcoming atmosphere.

·       Provide personalized book recommendations and assist with special orders.

·       Resolve customer concerns professionally and effectively.

·       Foster lasting relationships with customers and community members.


Inventory Management

·       Oversee inventory ordering, receiving, pricing, and merchandising.

·       Monitor stock levels and sales trends to maintain an effective product mix.

·       Coordinate returns and vendor communications.

·       Conduct periodic inventory counts and maintain accurate records. Staff Leadership

·       Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise bookstore staff and volunteers.

·       Provide coaching, guidance, and performance feedback.

·       Promote teamwork and maintain a positive work environment.

·       Ensure adequate staffing during peak business periods and events. Merchandising & Sales

·       Create attractive book displays and seasonal promotions.

·       Develop merchandising strategies that encourage discovery and increase sales.

·       Monitor sales goals and key performance indicators.

·       Identify opportunities for growth in books, gifts, and related merchandise. Events & Community Outreach

·       Plan and coordinate author events, book clubs, workshops, and community

programs.

·       Build relationships with local schools, libraries, businesses, and community organizations.

·       Support marketing efforts through social media, newsletters, and community outreach.

·       Represent the bookstore at community events when appropriate. Financial Responsibilities

·       Manage cash handling procedures and daily sales reconciliation.

·       Assist with budgeting, expense tracking, and financial reporting.

·       Monitor operational costs and recommend efficiencies when appropriate. Qualifications

·       Minimum 2 years of retail management, bookstore, or small business leadership

experience preferred.

·       Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.

·       Demonstrated ability to supervise staff and manage daily operations.

·       Experience with inventory management and point-of-sale systems.

·       Strong organizational and time-management skills.

·       Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.

·       Proficiency with basic computer applications and social media platforms. Preferred Qualifications

·       Knowledge of current publishing trends and book markets.

·       Ability to lift and carry boxes of books weighing up to 40 pounds.
