What is a BOM Configuration Manager?

A BOM Configuration Manager is a professional responsible for managing and overseeing the creation, maintenance, and accuracy of Bills of Materials (BOMs) within an organization. This role ensures that all components, assemblies, and materials required for product manufacturing are correctly documented and updated in engineering and production systems. BOM Configuration Managers coordinate between engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain teams to ensure product data is consistent and compliant with company standards and industry regulations. Their work is critical to efficient product development, change management, and minimizing production errors.

What are some common challenges a BOM Configuration Manager faces when coordinating with cross-functional teams?

A BOM Configuration Manager often works closely with engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain teams to ensure that product data is accurate and up-to-date across all systems. One common challenge is managing frequent design changes and ensuring these updates are clearly communicated to all stakeholders to prevent production errors. Additionally, aligning different teams' priorities and workflows can require strong organizational and communication skills. Effective use of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools and establishing clear change management processes can help mitigate these challenges.

What is the difference between Bom Configuration Manager vs Bom Planner?

AspectBom Configuration ManagerBom Planner
Primary FocusManaging and maintaining product structure data, ensuring accurate configuration across systemsPlanning and scheduling production based on BOM data, ensuring materials are available for manufacturing
ResponsibilitiesConfiguring BOMs, updating product structures, ensuring data integrityCreating production schedules, coordinating material requirements, optimizing inventory
Required SkillsData management, ERP system proficiency, attention to detailSupply chain knowledge, planning skills, ERP familiarity

The Bom Configuration Manager primarily handles the setup and maintenance of product structures, ensuring accurate BOM data. In contrast, the Bom Planner focuses on scheduling production and managing material requirements based on BOM information. Both roles are essential in manufacturing but serve different functions within the product lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BOM Configuration Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a BOM Configuration Manager, you need expertise in bill of materials (BOM) management, product lifecycle processes, and a degree in engineering, supply chain, or a related field. Familiarity with PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) software, ERP systems, and configuration management certifications like CMII are typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are critical soft skills in this role. These skills ensure accurate product data, efficient change management, and seamless coordination across engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain teams.

Job description

Ready to make connectivity from space universally accessible, secure and actionable? Then you've come to the right place!

E-Space is bridging Earth and space to enable hyper-scaled deployments of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions and services. We are building a highly-advanced low Earth orbit (LEO) space system that will fundamentally change the design, economics, manufacturing and service delivery associated with traditional satellite and terrestrial IoT systems.

We're intentional, we're unapologetically curious and we're 100% committed to innovate space-based communications and deliver actionable intelligence that will expand global economies, protect space and our planet and enhance our overall quality of life.

Overview

We are seeking a Configuration Management (CM) Engineer to own and enforce product configuration control across engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain systems. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of class I vs class II changes, product lifecycle management (PLM), and ERP bill-of-material (BOM) integrity. This role ensures that as-designed, as-planned, and as-built configurations align at every stage of production.

Key Responsibilities

- Define, implement, and enforce configuration control rules, including Class I vs Class II change thresholds (engineering vs minor production impacts).
- Manage and maintain BOM integrity across ERP, PLM, and MES systems.
- Perform as-built vs as-designed audits, ensuring hardware traceability between work orders, BOM revisions, and engineering documentation.
- Collaborate with engineering to validatepart numbers, revisions, and metadata before release to the BOM.
- Liaise with Planning and Production Control to ensure ERP BOMs accurately reflect approved configurations and effectivity dates.
- Create and maintainchange control documentation, including ECOs, ECRs, deviations, and waivers.
- Support ERP/PLM data migration, part-number standardization, and revision control efforts.
- Develop configuration baselines for prototype, qualification, and flight hardware.
- Participate in internal audits and ensure compliance with AS9100, ISO 9001, and company-specific QMS requirements.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for configuration management processes and digital thread traceability.

Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Manufacturing Systems, or related field.
- 5-10 years of experience in Configuration Management, Product Lifecycle, or Systems Engineering within aerospace, defense, or complex hardware manufacturing.
- Proven experience with ERP (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, Oracle) and PLM (e.g., Arena, Teamcenter, Windchill) systems.
- Strong understanding of Engineering Change Control (ECO/ECR) and revision management.
- Familiarity with BOM structures, serial number traceability, and work order management.
- Excellent attention to detail, documentation, and cross-functional communication skills.
- Knowledge of AS9100, ISO 9001, and ITAR compliance preferred.
