Job Summary:

Provide maintenance support to troubleshoot, calibrate, and maintain all instrumentation associated with the boiler, turbine, generator, and all auxiliary equipment for the plant.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Identify and follow safety guidelines to protect self, coworkers, plant equipment, and the public.
  • Apply federal, state, company, and environmental regulations to all work activities.
  • Install, calibrate, test, troubleshoot, and maintain protective relays, computers, metering, monitoring, and control systems for boilers, turbines, generators, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Perform bench work and component troubleshooting in a shop environment, as needed.
  • Read and interpret P&IDs, control wiring diagrams (CWDs), instruction manuals, blueprints, and control system drawings to locate, diagnose, and repair plant systems and interlocks.
  • Use test equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, multimeters, electronic bridges, loop calibrators) and hand tools to troubleshoot and maintain plant devices and systems.
  • Work with apprentice and skillenhancement employees to demonstrate safe work practices and proper maintenance procedures.
  • Make decisions regarding repair methods, tools, time, and resources required to complete work.
  • Complete accurate written and electronic records, including work orders, calibration sheets, timecards, and material requests.
  • Maintain and expand knowledge of plant systems, instrumentation, and control equipment.
  • Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Arrange personal transportation to work locations and accept reassignment to other company locations as needed.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School  Diploma, GED.
  • Five (5) years' experience in electronics and pneumatics, and instrumentation, or associate's degree in electrical technology
  • The position is a DOT PHMSA covered position and requires the successful candidate to pass a pre-employment DOT drug screen and drug and alcohol testing background check, and once placed will be a participant in the NRG DOT Program.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Knowledge of electricity, voltage, and current relationships.
  • Knowledge of maintenance activities and procedures for control systems used in power generation.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, repair, calibrate, and maintain pneumatic, electronic, and digital controllers, transmitters, and instruments (including temperature, pressure, and level).
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts, including algebra and geometry, to perform measurements and calibration computations.
  • Ability to Tag Out/Lock Out equipment according to company procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, regarding equipment condition and job status with supervision, operations, craft personnel, and external service providers.
  • Proficiency with personal computers and jobrelated software, including analytical tools and Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to influence others, accept responsibility for assigned work, and work effectively in a team environment.

Physical Requirements (Demand and Frequency):

  • Work in a power plant environment indoors and outdoors in all weather and temperature conditions, in accordance with heat stress procedures.
  • Work around large rotating equipment, energized electrical systems, highnoise areas, confined spaces, and elevated locations (including heights exceeding 250 feet).
  • Climb ladders and stairways and work from platforms and aerial devices.
  • Perform tasks requiring walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, twisting, pushing, pulling, climbing, shoveling, and working with hand tools (up to 50 lbs.) above, below, and away from the body.
  • Lift, carry, position, and use tools and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. in awkward positions.
  • Respond to emergency callouts and work irregular or rotating shifts as required.
  • Ability to discern assorted colors and respond to verbal and auditory signals.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Other:

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to prepare reports and documentation at management's request.
  • Limited travel may be required for training or support at other plant locations.
