Primary Function

The Boiler Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of high- and low-pressure boiler systems, steam distribution, and associated pressure vessels. This role ensures that WBAMC facilities receive uninterrupted steam and hot water services essential for clinical operations. The position requires strict adherence to National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) and ASME standards, utilizing DMLSS/LogiCole for preventative maintenance tracking and assisting in service order preparation.

Essential Duties

  • Operate, monitor, and maintain central plant boilers, furnaces, and water heaters to ensure proper steam pressure and water temperature.

  • Perform scheduled maintenance on safety valves and devices in accordance with ASME Sections I and IV.

  • Support annual boiler tuning and combustion analysis to optimize fuel efficiency and meet environmental standards.

  • Take water samples, perform chemical tests, and treat boiler feed water to prevent scale and corrosion.

  • Overhaul and service pumps, valves, and mechanical components related to the steam distribution system.

  • Maintain accurate logs of boiler operations, inspections, and water treatment results in DMLSS/LogiCole.

  • Identify failures and accurately determine time and materials required for boiler repairs to support service order estimate generation.

  • Strictly follow OSHA rules, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA) for all high-pressure system tasks.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :

  • Deep understanding of BAS building automation systems, steam systems, and high-pressure gas/liquid safety.

  • Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical and electro-mechanical systems using electronics and software.

  • Ability to fabricate items using hand and power tools and perform repairs in cramped equipment rooms.

  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs, work in temperatures ranging from 10F to 120F, and enter confined spaces like pits or crawl spaces.

Required Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • 3 years' experience in a healthcare or similar regulated industrial setting as a Boiler Operator or Stationary Engineer.

  • High school diploma/GED or higher education.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid Driver's License.

  • Qualified Boiler Operator Certification or equivalent accredited technical training (e.g., A.S. degree in related field or completion of an accredited Apprenticeship) .

  • Knowledge of NFPA, TJC, and local/state boiler codes.

Working Environment

  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures ranging from 10F to 120F.

  • Performed in environments with exposure to hazardous/high-pressure gases, hot liquids, and excessive temperatures.

  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and respirators when working with hazardous chemicals or gases.

  • Must be physically able to work in confined spaces, such as ductwork and crawl spaces, and on ladders or scaffolds up to 40 ft.

  • Must pass a background check for military installation access.
