Job Description

Under the supervision of the Boiler Shop Supervisor or his designated alternate, performs preventive and corrective maintenance on all boilers and associated equipment. Operate high pressure steam and hot water boilers, pumps, valves, regulators, steam traps, pipefitting, cleaning and painting. Contribute to a team effort and harmonious working relationship with others in the Engineering and Facilities Department and throughout MUSC. Maintain continuity between individual job assignments. Perform work in a most efficient and safe manner. Perform related and non-related duties as required by the Boiler Supervisor.

10% - Under the supervision of the Boiler Shop Supervisor or his designated alternate, clean and paint boiler room, pumps, valves, and lines, ensuring work area is maintained in a clean and orderly manner.

30% - Under the supervision of the Boiler Shop Supervisor or his designated alternate, perform preventive and corrective maintenance on all boilers to include all safety devices. Open all boilers for cleaning and inspection. Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on steam, water, air, oil, and gas valves, from 1/2 inch up to 8 inches, from repacking to complete tear down

30% - Under the supervision of the Boiler Shop Supervisor or his designated alternate, perform preventive and corrective maintenance on air, oil, gas and water pressure regulators, reducers and steam traps to insure proper operation. Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on all water, oil, condensate return pumps, from replacing packing and seals to compete tear down. Install and repair pipes (black iron, copper, PVC) ranging in size from 1/4 inch up to 3 inches.

30% - Under the supervision of the Boiler Shop Supervisor or his designated alternate, check all operating boilers once a day for proper operation, pressure, temperature, water and oil levels, fuel and air mixture, ensuring boiler logs are filled out. Perform weekly chemical test on boiler water and adjust chemical feed and blowdown boiler as required.

Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and three years trade experience that is directly related to the area of employment. Some positions require a commercial driver's license. Some positions require EPA-approved freon recovery certification.
