Job description

Description
The Steam Engineer/Boiler Operator position involves two or more maintenance or craft skill sets that must be utilized daily in order to keep the Plant operational. Duties for this position range from operating multiple Boilers over 4001-IP in accordance with laws, regulations and SOP's, repair/replacement of equipment (pumps, probes, etc.), monitoring of heating/cooling systems for water, water treatment systems, water filtration systems, and Air Compressors and Dryers as well as constant coordination with the Production Team to ensure the Utility Systems are properly supporting the Plant Operation.
Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Complete assigned PMs and WOs with complete thoroughness and report all parts used and any findings.
  • PM's/WO's assigned will primarily consist of Utilities Maintenance issues but required mechanical work will also be assigned.
  • WO's will be issued which can include requests from other departments (i.e., Safety, Quality, Production, etc.)
  • Monitor constantly the status of the Boilers via manual and automatic controls. Perform checks throughout the day to ensure all Boiler Safeties are functioning properly. Bring any concerns up to Management immediately. Shut down any Boiler immediately if there is a safety issue with it.
  • Troubleshoot equipment problems and perform immediate repairs as needed.
  • Respond to radio calls throughout the plant as it pertains to the Utility Area in order to assist with safety, quality, and production needs.
  • Monitor the Water Softener System, ensuring that the appropriate level of Salt is in each Brine Tank.
  • Work with the Maintenance Team and other department leads/managers on any issues that affect safety, quality, and production.
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety documents, operating, maintenance or procedure manuals and necessary prints.
  • Respond immediately to emergency situations (fire, evacuation, power/equipment failure, etc.).
  • Maintain the cleanliness of all Utility Areas.
  • Maintain a Daily Log of all events, inspections and items of note to help with information flow to all shifts and to help with analysis of issues and problems.
  • Keep updated on all information pertaining to all Utility Systems.

Requirements
Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.

Licenses/Certifications:
  • Must possess an Unlimited L.A. County Steam Engineer License or Unlimited Steam License at the time of hire.

Experience:
  • Minimum 4 years' experience operating and maintaining boilers of 200 HP or larger.
  • At least 3 years' experience in a high-speed food manufacturing environment (preferred).
  • Basic mechanical knowledge and skills, with the ability to repair or replace pumps, gearboxes, bearings, pipes, valves, hoses, etc. (3 years preferred).
  • Basic electrical knowledge, including understanding of breakers, VFDs, motors, starters, wiring, disconnects, level sensors, pressure sensors, and flow meters (3 years preferred).

Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced environment.
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
