The Composite Boat Builder will construct, fit-out and repair marine vessels from small recreational craft to larger commercial vessels. This position may be referred to as a Technician.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Fabricate boat parts using fiberglass, resin, and other composite materials
  • Repair damage to fiberglass and carbon boat hulls and other parts
  • Understand general boatbuilding principles and concepts
  • Make accurate cuts of wood and other materials using table and chop saws and other related power tools
  • Skilled in working directly from blueprints without assistance
  • Experience working with epoxy pre-peg laminating, vacuum consolidated wet laminating and vacuum infusion techniques along with an understanding in mold construction
  • Working knowledge of hi-tech materials is ideal, but, as we offer onsite training, any experience in construction in a crossover trade is acceptable
  • Composite construction methods
  • Must possess own tools
  • Availability to work overtime in order to meet deadlines
  • Other duties as assigned by Manager

Safety and Environmental Responsibilities

  • Follow SHM Safety and Environmental rules and complete required related training.
  • Wear proper personal protective equipment (may include safety glasses, gloves, life jackets and/or hard hats) as required for the task or work area.
  • Report all accidents, injuries, spills and near misses immediately.

Technical and Physical Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Technical school training preferred
  • Basic math skills required; advanced math skills preferred
  • Experience reading, understanding and following construction drawings and procedures preferred
  • Ability to ascend and descend a ladder
  • Must carry own tools
  • Ability to work in confined spaces
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Basic boat handling skills preferred
  • Any skills considered standard that a Technician should possess
