What is a boarding staff?

Boarding staff are professionals who work in boarding schools, hostels, or facilities that provide accommodation to students or guests. Their responsibilities include supervising residents, ensuring their safety and well-being, organizing activities, and serving as a point of contact between the residents and the institution. Boarding staff often manage daily routines, handle emergencies, and provide emotional support to help residents adapt to communal living.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a boarding agent, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Boarding Agent, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and typically a background in maritime operations or logistics. Familiarity with port management software, customs documentation systems, and industry certifications like IMDG (International Maritime Dangerous Goods) are often required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and cultural sensitivity are crucial soft skills for coordinating with ship crews, authorities, and clients. These skills ensure smooth ship turnaround, regulatory compliance, and effective stakeholder management in a dynamic port environment.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working in boarding roles, and how can they effectively manage them?

Professionals in boarding roles, such as those working in boarding schools or pet boarding facilities, often face challenges like managing diverse resident needs, handling emergencies, and maintaining clear communication with families or pet owners. Balancing administrative tasks with hands-on care and ensuring a safe, supportive environment can be demanding. Effective time management, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential for success. Developing routines, building rapport with residents and families, and participating in ongoing training can help professionals navigate these challenges and provide high-quality care.

What is the difference between Boarding vs Training?

Boarding involves caring for animals or individuals temporarily, often in a facility, while training focuses on teaching skills or behaviors, usually in educational or professional settings. Both roles require specific certifications and are common in their respective industries, but they serve different purposes: care versus education.

Job description

Bring Your Front Desk Skills Where the Regulars Are Thrilled to See You.

And some of them may even give you kisses.

If you're good at running a busy front desk, you know the job is about much more than answering phones.

You remember the regulars. You notice when something doesn't look right. You can have a client in front of you, another waiting, and a phone ringing without losing track of what you're doing. And when something needs to get done, you don't need someone standing over you telling you to do it.

If that sounds like you, we'd like to meet you.

The Wags Club is an established cage-free dog daycare and boarding facility serving Santa Monica and West Los Angeles. We're looking for an experienced customer-service professional to become an important part of our front desk team.

And yes - you'll get to know the dogs just as well as the people.

What You'll Be Responsible For

Our front desk is the communication center of our business. You'll:

Welcome clients and check dogs in and out accurately
Manage busy morning drop-offs and evening pickups
Answer phones and handle client questions
Process payments and maintain accurate transactions
Manage reservations and client information
Explain our daycare, boarding, and grooming services to prospective clients
Communicate feeding instructions, medications, special requests, and important notes to our pet-care team
Catch details or discrepancies before they become problems
Keep the front desk and lobby organized and professional
Assist with dog photos and occasional social media updates

The Person We're Looking For

We're less interested in someone who simply waits for the next task and more interested in someone who takes ownership of the front desk.

The strongest candidates will be:

Warm and genuinely good with people
Organized and exceptionally attentive to details
Comfortable juggling several things at once
Calm and professional during a rush
Resourceful when solving everyday problems
Self-motivated enough to notice what needs doing and do it
Dependable and punctual
Comfortable around dogs of every breed and size

Previous front desk, reception, hospitality, veterinary, medical office, spa, gym, or similar customer-service experience is strongly preferred.

Pet-care experience is helpful, but not required.

Pay & Benefits

$19-$21 per hour, depending on experience

Medical, dental, and vision insurance after probation
Complimentary daycare or boarding for your dog
Year-round employment with an established local business
Opportunity to grow within The Wags Club

About The Wags Club

The Wags Club is a cage-free dog daycare and boarding facility with a loyal community of West Los Angeles clients who trust us with members of their families.

Our front desk sets the tone for their experience.

We're looking for someone who takes pride in knowing the clients, knowing their dogs, knowing what's happening in the facility - and making sure things get done.

Interested?
