The Pharmacy Intern is supervised by a licensed pharmacist and is involved with the preparation, dispensing, and distributing medication to patients. While being supervised, the individual may engage in all activities related to pharmacy practice. Additionally, opportunities to observe clinical pharmacists will be offered to interns during their available hours, subject to staffing availability.

How You'll Impact Patient Care:
Under the general guidance of a pharmacist, the pharmacy intern undertakes the responsibilities of a pharmacy technician, including tasks such as fulfilling medication orders, delivering medications, compounding both sterile and non-sterile preparations, and gathering medication history.
Additionally:
  • All completed under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Prepares medications for dispensing.
  • Interviews patients to obtain medication history.
  • Perform duties related to medication ordering, receipt, stocking, and inventory control.
  • Performs clerical duties in the pharmacy to ensure efficient operations.
  • Receives and interprets medication/prescription orders and enters them into the pharmacy computer system.
  • Performs medication and prescription billing activities.
  • Opportunity to hold site and/or system pharmacy intern leadership positions.
  • Participation in mock job/residency interviews with CV review.
  • Project opportunities to work with site and system leadership.
  • Intern Development series to learn about various topics pertinent to professional development. Certification is available upon completion.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.

What You Will Need
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent and current enrollment in an accredited College of Pharmacy required.
  • A pharmacy intern does not require a license from the Board of Pharmacy, but all interns seeking practical pharmacy experience toward licensure as a pharmacist must register with the Board's internship program on forms provided by the Board.
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited or approved program in Pharmacy.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
  • Enrolled in the first or second year of a Doctor of Pharmacy degree program.
  • Good communication and customer service skills.
  • Strong attention to details.
  • Strong teamwork skills.
  • Effective multitasking and prioritization skills.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Must demonstrate integrity, maturity, dependability, a positive attitude and enthusiasm.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
  • Frequent fine motor motion of hands and wrists to operate keyboard and manipulate syringes.
  • Lifts, carries, and/or pushes/pulls various items (bags, boxes, carts, etc.) while utilizing proper technique.
  • Will be frequently required to lift to 35 lbs., lift and carry up to 35 lbs. at waist height a reasonable distance, push/pull with 30 lbs. of force.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, bend, kneel, climb, twist, crawl and reach above shoulders.
  • Must have functional speech, vision, touch, and hearing.
  • May be exposed to chemical hazards.
  • May be exposed to chemical and hazardous waste as well as blood and body fluids and communicable disease. Therefore, protective clothing and equipment must be worn as necessary.
