Embark on a fulfilling career at BNSF Railway, where joining our Engineering Department means contributing to the backbone of our nation's rail infrastructure. The Taconite Worker position ensures the efficient operation, maintenance, and safety of the Allouez Taconite Facility.

This is a full-time position (40 hrs/wk) and is governed by the union collective bargaining agreement and seniority. The Mechanical shops operate 24/7 with three 8-hour shifts, and subject to on call and various shifts off an extra board, weekends, holidays, and overtime.  

Travel is required during training and can be frequent and extensive over a large geographic area.

Training for this position is company-paid on-the-job training.

Key responsibilities may include: 

Operating taconite handling equipment and perform maintenance, cleaning, and occasionally welding, grinding and cutting various metals as well as fabricating and repairing equipment.

Operating heavy commercial equipment and will need the ability to obtain a crane operator certification. equipment, and obtain crane operator certification.

Understanding and troubleshooting 24-volt electrical and hydraulic systems.

Maintaining records, lifting, and carrying materials, and acting as a watchman for crew and equipment working near the track to ensure safety by always remaining alert.

Daily work is conducted in a safety sensitive environment where the working conditions can include diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet), walking and performing work on uneven surfaces, working around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Able to work now and in the future without BNSF's assistance (whether monetary, through sponsorship, or otherwise) in obtaining, maintaining, or extending employment authorization (including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN nonimmigrant status).
  • 21 years of age or older. 
  • Available to work in the geographic area indicated. 
  • Able to read, write and communicate (speak, hear and communicate) English. 
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet). 
  • Work a 40-hour work week. Shifts are governed by union agreement and subject to seniority. Mechanical shops operate 24 hours per day, 7 days per week with three 8-hour shifts including weekends, holidays and overtime. Available to work any of these shifts as required. 
  • Able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds. 
  • Possess Class A CDL with tanker and hazmat endorsements or be able to obtain one within 60 days of employment. 
  • Able to visually distinguish among red, blue, green, and yellow colors, hear, and with training, distinguish auditory signals. 
  • Able to use hands to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning and pulling. 
  • Able to perform work on uneven surfaces, frequently climb ladders and on/off equipment and work from various heights. 
  • Able to work in conditions that include loud noise and fumes, work on and around heavy and moving machinery, bend, walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time and use hand tools. 
  • Ability to pass basic welding tests to include vertical, flat and structural stick welding.
  • Follow safety policies and procedures and wear the required personal protective equipment required for the job in a safe manner.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Three (3) to five (5) years welding experience preferred (MIG, STICK, OXY / ACETYLENE). 
  • Two (2) years technical training preferred. Reading proficiency needed to perform various aspects of the job (i.e., instruction manuals, safety instructions, book of rules and regulations).

Union membership is with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and union dues are required per union agreement.

Seniority district transfersare handled per union agreement, are seniority based and require Superintendent of department approval.
